I knew the "producer" for a highly successful Los Angeles commercial photographer a number of years ago. The assistants would light the shot, determine proper exposure through polaroids, "lock down" the exposure on the camera then hand it to the photograher. He'd then direct the models, compose, manually focus and expose, maybe have the lighting revised between sequences, then do the same again. The film was sent to a commercial lab and they got it back, generally the next day. Chosen images went to the client. So how was this highly successful, nationally famous commercial photographer a "technician"? His brilliance was in conceiving the shots, getting the best from his models, composing and focus. I see nothing in what he personally did that I'd call technical. It was entirely artistic. I think that the technical side of photography then, and now, is 95% in print making.....old darkroom or new image processing/printing.
