This same topic comes up with about the same level of repetition.  I  
agree with the statement that printing is a craft (but that wasn't  
the original comment that sparked the conversation).  This list then  
is about craft not art and hence intricately entwined with  
conversations about technique, equipment and materials.  However, I  
still refute the notion that having a good understanding of these  
items is a basic need of an artist.  You can't make a photo (to  
outsource a print) if you can't operate your camera.  If you want end- 
to-end control over the expression of your vision, and you intend to  
exhibit a print, then understanding printing techniques, equipment  
and materials is beneficial also.
