Digital BW, The Print

this may sound dumb and as a teacher of social studies I always say there  is 
no such thing as a dumb question so hear it goes.......
I have been trying to print black and white pictures for a while now. i  have 
a Canon photo printer but it mixes color even when you want just black and  
white.
So i have been lurking here a while and reading that a Epson printer is  most 
likely the best way to go...so i bought one yesterday a Epson stylus Photo  
R280. Same problem...prints don't come out black and white...any  suggestions?
i tried grayscale with a photo setting for the paper still not black and  
white!
any help would be appreciated
