It's not a dumb question. The issue you're having is inherent with
all printers that don't have multiple black/gray inks.
If it's possible to only print with the black ink ("black only") you
may be able to avoid the color casts but possibly at the expense of
smoothness. If the driver doesn't have a black only checkbox there is
a shareware program called QTR which may make this possible. Try a
search.
The other thing you can do is hope that a better printer profile can
make the color casts less obvious. Sites like inkjetart.com and
Cathy's profiles can give you custom profiles for under $40USD.
If you're just looking for an affordable printing platform for casual
prints consider the HP 8450 or similar HP printers (7960, 8750) which
have multiple gray inks. You'll be limited as to paper choice and I
don't think the inks are archival (I have a B&W print from a similar
HP from 2 years ago that has started to shift colors).
Otherwise consider one of the printers listed at paulroark.com which
can take a dedicated B&W inkset which is what I do with several Epsons.
