We may be talking about different things here.  My 1400 does, indeed, 
act differently than other Epson printers in that I can't pre-feed the 
paper with the button on the printer.  It does shot it straight through 
if I try that.  So, I don't.  That behavior is so consistent I assumed 
it was an intentional -- though odd -- part of the design.  

If, however, the driver sends the 1400 the signal to start printing it 
feeds the paper extremenly well.
