just want to warn people that the paper feed with this model is the most maddening I've experienced with any Epson since 1997. Be prepared to dig deep into your reserve of patience and emotional maturity. Also wanted to see if anyone else using a 1400 has discovered any tips... Tyler

Tyler, I've been printing on one for about a month. It has taken my thick cotton rag as effortlessly as my thin mulberry paper. Maybe you got a bad printer??? could be, others using it at the recent workshop also had problems, so I know it's not just me... Thanks for the info, helpful. T --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Jenny Ellerbe" <jenny.ellerbe@...> wrote:

If samples of the 1400 vary substantially in how well they handle paper, I think I'd try to return a bad sample to Epson claiming it was defective. It would be interesting to see how they react to that type of warranty claim. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Dear Tyler & Paul, I've been sorely tempted by the glowing reports of the 1400 as a dedicated B&W printer, but I'm leary of having another fussy Epson paper feeder (have had struggles with the 3800 as well). The maximum paper thickness that B&H lists for the printer is 11.8 mil. Maybe Paul is getting good results because he uses thin papers? I remember, Tyler, how persnickety that printer was in the workshop! Christy

I don't know Christy, it shot 5 thin bond sheets in a row all the way through today before accepting one just for a nozzle check. THis on top of getting it to take the thick sheets at all, and when it does not shooting those through too (I'm sure you recall). Perhaps it is faulty as Paul suggests. On the other hand, I tend to wonder what can really be expected from such an economy printer. Have you lived with your prints enough to have thoughts on the ink set? Hi Tyler: Just for fun, I recommend putting a heavy sheet of watercolor paper behind the thin sheets you are feeding and see if that helps with the feeding, I would not exceed the 12mil limit for the watercolor paper though just in case it also feeds through. Hope that helps, Andrew --------------------------------------------------- Andrew Darlow Editor, The Imaging Buffet http://www.imagingbuffet.com Author, 301 Inkjet Tips and Techniques: An Essential Printing Resource for Photographers - http:// www.inkjettips.com On Jun 14, 2008, at 9:24 PM, Tyler Boley wrote: > I don't know Christy, it shot 5 thin bond sheets in a row all the way > through today before accepting one just for a nozzle check. No. Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 feeds with no assist at all; same for Ilford Gold and all common papers I've tried. The only paper I need a slight manual assist for that I use is Premier Art Hot Press 325. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

We may be talking about different things here. My 1400 does, indeed, act differently than other Epson printers in that I can't pre-feed the paper with the button on the printer. It does shot it straight through if I try that. So, I don't. That behavior is so consistent I assumed it was an intentional -- though odd -- part of the design. If, however, the driver sends the 1400 the signal to start printing it feeds the paper extremenly well. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Hi, i wonder if the 1400 feeds Calumet Brilliant Fineartpapers (which i love most) which are 300 mg and 18-19 mil.? Premier Art Hot Press 325 for example has 17 mil. i guess and Paul wrote that this paper needs a slight manual assist. What do you think? I think the trick to making Epson a reliable paper feeder includes cleaning the rollers every so often...gunk accumulates, more with some paper than with others. How to clean? IMO the smartest thing (least goofy) is to use the printer cleaning kits sold by office supply stores...they include sheets of some sort of tough paper that's soaked in a cleaner and sealed in envelopes to prevent drying. I use them whenever paper stops feeding reliably. It might be possible to recharge this tough fiberglass-like paper with Windex or ammonia..I've not tried. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "frankbickelmeyer" <bickelmeyer@...> wrote: > > Hi, > i wonder if the 1400 feeds Calumet Brilliant Fineartpapers (which i > love most) which are 300 mg and 18-19 mil.?
