Re: [Digital BW] Re: Dedicated B&W printer - Epson 1400 or 2200

2010-01-09 by Jorge Gaj

Well folks, I’m now the proud owner of a new Epson Stylus
Photo 1400. It‘s time to purchase inks for my new printer, and I need your
input and advice in how to make the printer a dedicated B&W printer.
I have read some of Paul Roark’s articles on printing
B&W pictures and I have to commend Mr. Roark for great knowledge on the
subject and his kindness in sharing his research with all of us. In one of his articles he mentioned that “The
most lightfast and tonally stable B&W prints today are made with inksets composed
of 100% carbon pigments…” Further down, in the same article he states “that
only two 100% carbon approaches being used regularly – MIS Eboni-based inksets
and Inksjetmail K6 carbon sepia.
If possible, I’m interested in purchasing 100% carbon inksets,
with no color inks, and I had in mind purchasing the EB6 Carbon Monotone
inkset. I’m interested in buying the inks
plus refill cartridges and the chip resetter. My problem is that when I went to the MIS website I only found for sale
the MIS UT-1400 Ultratone inkset for sale and didn’t found the Ebony-6 inset
for sale.
Questions:
1) Is the Ebony 6-inkset discontinued and no longer
for sale?
2) Is the MIS UT-1400 an inkset with added colors?
3) Someone mentioned using a single cartridge of
Eboni. Only one cartridge to print a B&W photo?
a. How is that possible?
b. Do you keep the color cartridges in place, or
you removed them and leave the slots empty?
4) What other alternatives I have if the Ebony-6 is
discontinued?
5) And if the Ebony-6 inkset is not discontinued, is
it the best inkset for me to start with, since I am a novice in printing
digital B&W photographs?
Folks, thank you very for your
help in this matter.
jorge

Jorge

I currently use the 1400 for my B&W printing up to 13" wide. I'm using a combination of Eboni-6 (could be Carbon-6) and HP Z3100 PK.
See http://www.paulroar k.com/BW- Info/Eb1400. pdf

MIS's inksets are listed on my index at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/
