Refillable carts...why remove them to refill?

Refillable carts...why remove them to refill?

2010-08-26 by gmikol

So I've got an Epson R1900, currently with OEM carts that I'm considering replacing with refillable carts. I've been reading the refilling instructions here:

http://www.inksupply.com/instructions/r260_slc_refill.pdf

And I keep getting hung up on one thing...why remove the cartridges to refill them? If you're refilling from the top, not removing them seems to avoid the need to re-prime the bottom port.

This especially makes sense with the InkSupply carts, since they can be reset just by pressing the ink change button once they hit empty.

I'm super new to this, so I'm sure I'm missing something critical. I'd appreciate any info the group could provide to help me along.

Thanks--
Greg

Greg, if you fill them in situ there is a danger that you'll force ink
through the head.
Also I am not convinced that they will reset without removing. I have 2 x
1900 and am yet to find carts that reset as described below - despite
suppliers claiming they do. Let us know how you get on. Mike

Mike--

Thanks for the warning, but I have a follow-up question. The R1900 cartridges aren't pressurized, right? So how would it be possible to force ink through the head. I may understand this more once I get the cartridges in-hand, but until then, I'm hoping you can help me out.

Also, can you tell me what cartridges you use for your R1900's?

Thanks--

Greg

Greg,

In the shortest possible explaination- it is easier to refill the carts in a
bathroom or kitchen sink than to clean it off the inside of your printer. It is
a pretty easy process but there is room for errpr & mishap. If you are not care,
things can turn ugly quickly. There is also a need to "prime" the cartridge
after fill/refilling it by siphoning a small quanity of ink from the output
port.

All things considered, I would recommend trying it over a catch basin first and
then develop your own personal style for safety sake if nothing else.

Phil
