Four Pro Digital SLRs Compared

Four Pro Digital SLRs Compared

2002-02-25 by culturalvisions

For those of you following the upsurge of new pro level digital
cameras, there is a comparison chart on dpreview with specs.
for Sigma SD9, Fuji S2, Nikon D100 and Canon D60. After
looking at the comparisons, I may be wrong in assuming that the
D100 is based of the F100.

I repeat that for the purpose of this forum, we can only consider
these instruments for b/w digital capture.

Every piece of information that I have found about this camera indicates
it's based on the F80. Where are you getting this F100 idea?

The D100 looks very similar to the F80. It also has the same pop-up flash as
the F80. No sync terminal, sync speed limited to 1/180. If it looks and
smells like an F80, then .........

OK, So it looks and smells like an F80 (I'm glad I didn't step in it).
Does that mean that the Fuji S2 and the Nikon D100 are based
on the same bodies? If that is the case, is Nikon trying to shoot
itself in the foot or do they want to take Fuji out? I have heard that
Nikon has been less than thrilled with Fuji using their bodies.
Then again, I am a font of misinformation.

As a very happy Fuji s1 user, I am interested in the S2.

Yes, the D100 and S2 are both based on the N80 body. Nikon
presumably could not use the F100, as that would make the D100 too
much like the D1x.

At this stage in the game, I think the sensor / electronics are more
important than the body, provided the body is good enough, which I
guess the N80 is. The Fuji S2 uses an advanced proprietory sensor:
I'd expect it to win out in image quality, but if not, my Nikon
lenses also fit the Nikon or Kodak lines :-)...

But not the Contax N1 Digital I looked at today at Focus :-(

Taken directly from the Dpreview website.....

----
The D100 has a six megapixel sensor, a body loosely based on the F80 (although
Nikon are keen to note that it shares only some of its components with that camera),
a Nikon F mount and a set of features which make it an extremely attractive and
capable proposition.

I agree that D100/F100 would have been a logical naming convention but I guess
Nikon didn't think so.
