Epson 3800 Frontload help?

Epson 3800 Frontload help?

2011-01-12 by mediaworks2003

Wanted to do a nice B&W but on my 3800 = Tried loading Epson Velvet from the rear slot. Was a real pain. Took numerous tries. Decided to use front loader. Pulled paper in ok but when it fed it back the paper ran into the back of the front loader and was all crumpled up. What did I do wrong? Are you suppose to push the front loader back in once it is fed through to the back. Thanks

Hi mediaworks2003:

Since Epson Velvet is not a very thick paper. I recommend using the regular top feed slot-just choose a Premium Matte Paper from the options in the driver. I explain how to do that, with a screen shot in this review of the 3880 (look for the first screen shot to find the info fast):

or

The front feed is for much thicker materials, and I recommend following the info in the manual to make it work properly. Below is a link to the manual in PDF form (the info is on page 40).

You can use a thick board as a "sled" for a thinner paper, but it is not worth the effort in my opinion.

Hope that helps,

Andrew

Andrew,

Thanks for the info.
Still have two questions though.
1. Won't selecting a different paper produce an incorrect profile?
2. I did follow the procedure in the manual for front loading yet I did
repeatedly ended up with a crumpled mess.

Thanks

Hi Bill:

I would not worry much about the paper type affecting the color. A quick test should confirm that, and if you are very concerned, a custom profile will help (especially for color). You may be using Advanced B&W, so it should not matter.

The crumpling is probably because the front feed is expecting a much heavier board.

All the best,

Andrew

Hi Mediaworks:

I've had the same problem on my 3800, your paper is curled up. If you
de-curl it, it will go through better. You can also watch it coming
out, and direct the paper downwards with a ruler or something similar
until it passes that critical point.

As far as I can tell, the 3800 profiles for Archival Matte, Enhanced Matte and Velvet Fine Art are absolutely identical.
