Epson 1400 and thick paper !!

Epson 1400 and thick paper !!

2011-01-27 by Louis de Stoutz

Just discovered a crucially important feature of the 1400 which is not
mentioned in the user guide!

There is a checkbox for thick paper and envelopes. My printer had
developed a banding problem, when I accidentally found this box. When
clicked, the banding disappeared. It probably increases the distance of
the head to the paper, a feature I had on the 2100/2200 and bitterly
missed on the 1400.

For those of you who like me didn't know about this feature, you will
find it in the
Printer Settings -> Maintenance tab -> Printer and Option Information

And for those of us who use QTR directly to print? Is there such an
option? Is it perhaps encoded somehow in the paper profile?

I do use QTR, and it nonetheless worked! It must be that the Epson
driver sends this command to the printer independently from printing,
and that it stays that way until a contrary command is issued. But I'm
no specialist, and maybe somebody else can comment on this?

On my SP1400 with QTR, I only use thick papers (Hahnemühle, 308 or 310g), and never noticed any problem of banding.
The only issues I have with such papers are:
-> Paper feeding (the printer is not very accurate a this point, I often have to help)
-> small grey rolls (that guide the paper) that make some strange things on the print, even if they are before the printer head.

But this is another story...

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 1400 and thick paper !!

2011-01-28 by Louis de Stoutz

Bonjour Sylvain,

I use Harman by Hahnemhle 320g and now it's ok. But a few months ago I
had the head still on low position and printed too close to the edge of
the paper. Since the paper is not totally flat, I heard a couple of
times the head hit against the paper edge. Hope nothing got damaged...

The banding I was referring to appeared all of the sudden after printing
for quite a while without any problems (and at low head position). I
first thought the ink level was too low, but it continued even with a
new cartridge. Only that paper-setting "fixed" it! It's a bit strange,
because I don't detect any damage to the paper surface, so the head
probably wasn't touching the paper. I also thought of blocked nozzles,
but a nozzle check came out ok.

Remains the possibility of something hanging under the head (dust), and
I would like to ask if there is a way to clean the head surface other
than doing a cleansing cycle, which probably wouldn't remove anything
hanging there anyway?

Inkjetmall.com has an excellent video showing how to clean desktop printers, including cleaning the wiper blade that scrapes the bottom of the print head during cleaning cycles.

It also shows how to use a paper towel moistened with PiezoFlush solution to clean the bottom of the head. Regurlary cleaning the capping station is very important too (also shown in the video). They use Epson 1400 in the video, but it applies to other desktop printers as well.

Interesting video, it's about what I've done for years to clean my C88s
but it's nice to have my general process confirmed. That 's a nifty
little cartridge simulator they use to flush the heads themselves,
EXCEPT I thought we weren't supposed to force fluid through the heads.
Risk of delaminating them or some such. Have I misunderstood the
warnings on this point?

Cheers,
Kip

I had to use it twice (Inkjetmall's PiezoFlush, modified cartridge, fitting syringe and the "push-pull" technique shown in the video) on the same printer and both times it worked great, the printer is still working fine.

First time I left this printer unused for a few months to a point where the ink dried out in the cartridges completely. The clog was severe, but this cleaning kit did the trick. The second time, I thought that the chips on refillable cartridges would be more accurate when these cartridges are used for the very first time.

That was a mistake -- one cart ran out of ink in the middle of printing while Epson monitor was still showing about 30% in this cart. The kit helped to clear the resulting clog.
