Wonderful, deep blacks

Wonderful, deep blacks

2011-02-23 by Lew Schwartz

I posted the below to a traditional, wet darkroom group, asking if any of
the neutral tone developers would help. I'm posting here to ask if any of
your inkjet experiences look anything like the gum-platinum prints in the
show.

Just getting back from Stieglitz, Steichen, Strand at the Met. I'm
completely blown away by the difference between the wonderful deep
tones of the gum over platinum prints vs the gs prints, including the
ones made by Steiglitz himself. There's such a visible difference
between the washed out greys of the gs and the velvety blacks of the
other processes!

I envy you the chance to see those prints! Living in Singapore, the
opportunity to see master work like that just doesn't come. Sigh... I
have had some luck printing with an Epson 10600 using Jon Cone's K6
inks (the special edition set) on a paper from Japan made by Awagami.
Their Bamboo paper has a very warm tone, smooth transitions, very
gravure-like. It isn't the same but it is pretty good, nonetheless.
I do wish I could see those original prints!!!

Alas, my follow up question was to ask where I could go to see some
Cone Piezography
ink prints if anyone claimed a similar appearance. I don't know if the
exhibit will travel or not, but it might. It's from their permanent
collection, I believe. Jon watches this list, maybe he'll chime in.

Do you know anything more about the gum over platinum process? Can you point
me to a reference?
