Digital BW, The Print

Hi,
I wondered what working space people prefer to use, to tone BW images for CMYK use in publications.

I was told to use aRGB which would then be converted by the layout person to CMYK - but they got lighter in the conversion. I tried again, toning them in sRGB and they didn't change at all when I converted them to CMYK.

I'm not quite sure what the reason for this is - can anyone advise me?

Also, I notice a shift to the right in CMYK histograms after all conversions, even when the picture looks the same, which strikes me as odd.
