3800 Cartridge/Ink Swapping - crazy idea?

3800 Cartridge/Ink Swapping - crazy idea?

2011-04-28 by Terry Ritz

I was spoiled with how easy it was to swap between colour and b/w inks in my
2200. Now I find myself wondering if it¹s at all realistic to do the same
with my 3800. It¹s not that I don¹t have a colour printer to use. Rather,
I¹m contemplating printing on aluminum and my wide format colour printer
does not have a straight through printing path. While the 3800 is designated
for b/w work (HP PK dilutions) I may need to load colour inks occasionally.

Does anyone care to venture how much ink I might loose in each swap and what
other issues I might face?

Thanks.

Terry.

Terry,

I switch between b/w inkset and color inkset on my 3800. It takes 3
full power cleans to fully flush out the previous inkset. A full
power head clean consumes about 15m. total of ink. It will also fill
up your maintenance tank pretty quick. I also normally run b/w but
I occasionally need to do a color run of blank cd disks that utilizes
the straight thru path. Don't see any other issues doing this other
than the waste of ink.

Cheers,
Mark

How do you print on cd disks with a 3800?

That's 45ml total, or $40 to $45 (Canadian) to go from colour to monochrome
(plus maintenance tank costs). Does that sound about right Mark?

I knew it would be pricey, but that's a bit more than I had guessed. It
makes third party colour inks look attractive.

Terry.

Well yes, I also use 3rd party so the actual cost isn't as much

Re: [Digital BW] 3800 Cartridge/Ink Swapping - crazy idea?

2011-04-28 by Mark Sonners

I create a 16x25 inch canvas on a 2 ply , cheap matte board stock, and print a target template. This consists of 12 up copies of the disc imprint, 3 across and 4rows. The 1st row should begin about 3 inches from the leading edge. The target can be printed in b/w. I usually create 2 of these target sleds, so I can be loading 1 up while the 2nd one is printing. I attach the individual blanks directly over the imprinted target and adhere with Avery round stickers that are placed over the spindle hole and pressed down to stick to the matte board. Once all of the discs are in place I slide the sled into the front loading opening of the 3800. For print settings I use Archival Matte, 1400dpi and a -24% ink load with a -70 ink dry setting. I try to use the HP printable disc brand. It has the best surface for the matte K1 ink on the 3800. I get those from Fry's @ $24.00 per hundred. Because I use 3rd party ink the ink cost per disc is less than $0.5 ea. Print time per sled is about 6 mins. I created a custom profile by placing the discs in such a way as to cover the enitre profile target and read the squares individually to create the full icc profile. Match to the soft proof is pretty good. I found that the 3800 is very well suited for running the discs compared to any other printer that I've tried. This is about the best all around production disc printing set-up that I've come across because low ink cost. However the 3800 is also too good of a dedicated b/w printer that I have it do the double duty and do the inkset switch when I need to run the discs. I only do the discs about once a month so I can't really justify getting a 2nd printer.

Cheers,
Mark

It looks like 3rd party colour would run $10 to $12 per swap. Much more palatable.

Which ink set are you using?
