Odd ICC effect

Odd ICC effect

2011-04-30 by Paul

I've been printing 8x10" test prints on various glossy papers with the HP PK + MIS Gloss Optimizer ("HpGO" -- see http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/1100-HpGO.pdf) approach to see how real images, as opposed to just test strips, look. I use a PS curve to partition the curves and then embed this in an ICC with QTR's Create ICC-RGB. (See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Embedding_Photoshop_Curves_in_ICCs.pdf)

The image I was using as a test image was somewhat large -- 360 dpi at 22 x 28", 16 bit. Frankly, I don't consider this 142 mb file all that large.

All was working well. Then I made a rather minor change in the PS partitioning curve. The result was a test print that was way too light. I re-made the ICC, thinking I'd made a mistake. No change -- still way too light. A 21-step test strip with the ICC was perfect. Then I tried the print after it had been reduced to 360 dpi across the 8x10" size and mode changed to 8 bits. It printed perfectly.

Apparently a minor change in the PS curve triggered something that caused the approach to choke on the file size. (Windows 7, CS5, Create ICC-RGB v. 2.7.0.0)

I won't have much time to test other files and variables for a while (off to SW Missouri for a week), but I'd be interested if anyone else has seen this effect.
