Hi David,

A. Get a CIS system and forget cartridges.

you need about 2700 DPI or so for a really sharp 7x10 inch color print, so a scan at 1600 dpi would not give you optimum sharpness. 1600
should give you a sharp 5x7.5 print. You can upsample to an 8x12, but it won't be nearly as sharp as if you scanned it at 2700 DPI. 4000 DPI
would be even sharper, of course, which most of the new 35mm scanners can easily do.

If you are going to use pigment archival inks, they do not work well on glossy or semi glossy papers.

Hi jerry,
A cis system is in the works I wanted to play around with quadtones some
before I jumped in. As regards the dpi figures...I gather that I can
expect some pretty nice 8 x 8 prints from my medium format negs(6x6) at
1600 dpi. That leads to another question, should I print from a 8 in x 8
in 400 dpi image or, once I have the image, should I resample until the dpi
is closer to the print dpi of 1440? I'm not sure I'm articulating that
question clearly...

thanks

[Digital BW] newcomer questions

David,

You wrote:

Pigmented inks like the MIS VM inkset do not do well on glossy paper (or
semi-gloss). I always recommend trying Epson Archival Matte both because
it's a good paper and it's cheap.

>2)What are some guidelines for acceptable dpi. Scanning from 35mm
negatives
>at 1600 dpi, what's a reasonable enlargement size to hope for?

I prefer to print at 360 dpi -- that's at the print size. Above that you
don't get enough to bother with larger files. Below that can be OK also.
Some fine 240 dpi to be fine. So, you can work from that to figure out what
you need from the scanner.

1600 dpi, if it is from a flatbed like my Epson 1600, is not a high quality
dpi. My Epson 1600 is an excellent 800 dpi scanner or about as good as a
fairly inexpensive 1200 film scanner.

>3)I noticed on the mis site, it recommends only using brand new cartridges
>if you swap back and forth between epson and mis inksets(or mis and mis

I have switched back and forth between partially use carts and a CIS. It
takes three or more cleaning cycles to get the nozzle check perfect. So,
you do lose some ink and time. Also, the machines appear to count the
cleaning cycles and will shut down after a large number -- a way to demand
service. So, doing lots of cleaning cycles ends up having a monetary
penalty associated with it.

Good luck with your new inks.

David, you'll get excellent 12x12 prints from 120 negs with that scanner. You can print photographs at 240 DPI. 300 DPI is a little sharper. Beyond that, you can't tell much difference. I always
scan everything at the maximum OPTICAL resolution, and leave it set that way always. In your case this would be 1600 DPI. Then just set your file size for either 240 or 300 DPI at the size you want
to print. But DON'T resample the image to a lower DPI. Someday you might want to print a larger print, and once the data is gone by resampling, you can't get it back.
Set the printer at 1440 DPI for maximum quality

Does this apply to all Epsons? I actually find this a
bit distubing. Esp. since I can be quite liberal with
my cleaning cycles "..do one more, just for good
measure." Anyone know what this number is? Have you
experienced this yourself? I've got a 1280 & 1270.

Thanks for the tip,

I don't know. My 1160 shut down after a year of use with a very high
frequency of cleaning. In testing various inksets, I have at times had
three different inksets/cartridges in my 1160 in a single day. After a year
of this, it cost me about $97 for a service/cleaning. I suspect the machine
was a mess and needed cleaning.

What I now do is use the top/vacuum method of filling carts. This cuts the
cleaning cycles way down (and preserves the 1 micron screen, I'm told).

I check nozzles a lot, but find I don't have to clean that often now.

Repair manuals can be purchased that instruct how to reset the
firmware, hence the cleaning cycle count.

I have Epson shop manual for the 860 which also "sort of" covers the
1160. What it does is write a few things to the EPROMS in the printer.
The printer literally keeps track of cleaning cycles. This can be
reset in a jiffy by special software, which only runs on Win98 through
LPT port. BUT, you have to somehow get the software to rewrite the
EPROMS from an Epson tech, and I haven't been able to do this yet. If
I could I could changeout my own printheads in an hour or three, as
the software also runs three special alignments on the printhead.

If I remember, the EPROMS can also be told where the printer was
destined for, ie, USA or Timbucktoo.<g>

Paul,

Are you using your cartridges just once and not refilling them? My
impression is that you can only use the top/vacuum method on virgin carts.

Martin,

Yes, I just use new, virgin carts with the top/vacuum fill method. It seems
to be a great combination -- 90% perfect nozzle checks the first time.
