Roark UT3D profiles not showing up

Roark UT3D profiles not showing up

2012-02-15 by kaiyen.rm

Hi all,
I'm not able to see the Roark UT3d ICC profiles. Windows, Vista 64 bit, either PS or Qimage.

Any thoughts? Installed in right directory. I can see all the other profiles in that directory.

Thanks Paul. The URL didn't come through. I'm missing a slash or an underscore or something.

Some of the browsers today do not allow the downloading method anticipated in the UT-3D PDF. What gets downloaded is not an ICC even though it may appear to be one. The curves and ICCs are now in a Zip file and should download OK.

Allan,

It looks like the Yahoo system did not like the space in the Zip file name. I've now changed it to
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/UT-3D-Profiles.zip

Hopefully this will work.

Thanks Paul - spaces in filenames often cause problems with Windows in
general too

Thanks Paul. I swear I tried just deleting that space...

Another question, for anyone...I have used Qimage to output before, but used the generic QTR profiles. Can/should I output with Qimage using these new profiles, then print with QTR?

Or, since Qimage is still 8 bit, I should use PS?

If you want to print with QTR, I don't think these are the profiles you
need, and I'm not sure there are any - I didn't find any when I looked a
while ago.

I used to assume, incorrectly, that most QTR users made their own profiles. So, with the older inksets I did not make QTR profiles.

The profiles that I did make for the UT-3D inkset were ICCs that included embedded Photoshop curves to control the inks. The curves are also in the Zip file. The idea was that QTR's Create ICC-RGB would allow users to take the curves that exist and linearize new and different papers with them.

I don't use QImage, but I thought it was an RGB, color managed workflow that would use the ICCs and not the QTR profiles. Is this incorrect?

Yes, that is what Qimage does. It's just that it didn't work all that well going print to file from Qimage without applying a generic "matte" or "glossy" ICC to the output. It didn't affect "color." It affected ink output, I guess.

It's just that I always liked how Qimage took a file of resolution X and handled making it one of resolution Y, the latter being optimized for the printer. That's all.

I intend to use QTR's curve creation tool and the great starting point you've provided, Paul, to create curves for all papers. But I just want to get started again after having been away for a while.

So...since QTR itself doesn't support these ICC profiles, what is your recommended workflow (point me to an earlier post if I'm going over past stuff - I still hate the search function in groups)? Photoshop, print to file, apply desired curve for desired paper combination. Open in QTR with...what settings?

I'm more than willing to experiment once sent in the right direction.

thanks,
allan

I see the Epson driver, using the PS curves in ICCs, and the QTR rip with it's Curve Creator as distinct and separate workflows. The curves I've made do not work when imported into the Curve Creator because they are RGB curves. The only curves you can import are gray scale curves.

QTR, of course, is an excellent workflow for those who can make the curves or if there are existing curves. I have not made QTR curves or profiles for the UT-3D inkset. You might want to ask on the QTR forum -- http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/messages -- whether someone there has profiles they would be willing to share.

The workflow I supported with some at least starter profiles was with the Epson drive and ICCs. That is what is outlined in http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/UT-3D_Readme.pdf Starting at page 6 I set out the settings I used. While I made the ICCs useing QTR's Create ICC-RGB, once the ICCs are made, the workflow is strictly an Epson driver workflow. QTR is not involved.

I hope this is helpful.

very helpful. I think I got myself tied up trying to figure it out. I now understand the different workflows. thanks.
