Silver Efex Pro 2 or Silver Shadows Pro

Silver Efex Pro 2 or Silver Shadows Pro

2012-04-25 by Bill Lewis

While looking for information on converting to B&W in Lightroom 4 I found Silver Efex Pro 2 and Silver Shadows Pro. These two products came up in searches while I have heard of Silver Efex and have found that it is available as an Academic license the price of Silver Shadows is still lower. Has anyone used these and what are your thoughts.

I have also purchased books on LR 4 and have other books on B&W in photoshop and have watched some videos on converting to B&W. I have converted several and am mostly pleased with the result but they do not have the pop of the ones in the video. This may be the subject or the file I am using to convert they have been either scans of Fugi slides or 8 megapixel images from my Sony DSC-H3. I am doing a buy as I go so am still missing some important items that may help with viewing and printing.

Thanks for your time

i have been using silver efx pro since version 1 and all i can say it is a
great product, simple to use with a lot of pre built functions and lots of
flexibility when you want more. i do believe you can demo one for a while
without charge

Yes, you have posted this before, BUT, it's an excellent article, and I use the product. It's easier than PS conversions, and does seem to add "pop" to the conversion!

Re: [Digital BW] Silver Efex Pro 2 or Topaz B&W

2012-04-26 by Bill

A very good article I do see Silver Efex mentioned more than silver shadows which is seldom mentioned and has fallen from my list. In the process of watching Utube videos on Silver Efex I saw videos for Topaz B&W. It also looks to be a good product for much less than Silver Efex.

Does anyone on the list use or have an opinion on Topaz B&W. This is one of several products from Topaz Labs that look similar to OnOne products. Needless to say the more I read and look the more confused I become I have Lightroom 4 and curently feel like I am standing in a pit at the base of the learning curve. I have watched a dozen or more videos on converting to B&W in Lightroom. I have just received Martin Evening's Lightroom 4 book and will look at what it has on B&W.

So far the half dozen photos I converted in Lightroom are not what I would get from my darkroom. The blacks look black and the whites white but they seem to have too much in the midtones. This is my ability with the software and while I want to use lightroom properly for the immediate time I am looking for something that will assist in this so Silver Efex or Topaz B&W Silver Efex has an academic discount so for me retired and returning to College Classes the actual price is not that much more. I understand that Silver Efex will work stand alone or as a Photoshop plug-in while Topaz is only a plug-in. Probably either program would do more than I want but I am just trying to avoid buyers remorse.

I use the Topaz B&W tool (and with the installation of a separate, free,
app from Topaz it can be used from Lightroom). I took a quick look at
Silver Efex when trying Topaz out and decided that I could understand the
Topaz UI better. My current B&W workflow starts in Lightroom (4.0) for most
images (RAW originals) and usually gets into Photoshop Elements (9.0)
quickly where I can work on multiple layers and even use the Topaz tools on
multiple layers.

There is a trial version of the Topaz tools, although the one thing I
dislike is that they expect you to evaluate all of them in the same time
period (I may end up buying more than the Topaz B&W, Adjust, and Detail
tools I already have, but I tend to add on tools as my skills expand). I'd
recommend lining up a half dozen images that span the range of your
interests and dedicate a couple of hours to each one using each tool. I
found it hard to gauge the full tool in less than 10-15 hours of work.

Re: [Digital BW] Silver Efex Pro 2 or Topaz B&W

2012-04-27 by John Anderson

G'day Bill,

I mostly print colour but do the occasional B&W as the subject demands.
Formerly, I did all my conversions to B&W in Photoshop using one of the
many methods available there as appropriate. Last year I acquired the Topaz
package (I needed/wanted Adjust and Remask which fitted my processing
better than Nik) and that included B&W Effects. I now prefer to use it for
conversions rather than PS (faster to get the "effect"). It is very capable
but I usually do some micro adjustments using layer masks in PS. I did try
an eval of Silver Efex and was very impressed - it would further reduce PS
work. My take on it was that if B&W was going to be my primary goal, I
would go with Nik but if not, Topaz. OnOne had a similar set of offerings
but had no "killer" package IMHO.
