May need a new printer, what should I get?

May need a new printer, what should I get?

2012-11-01 by Scott

Hi all,

I currently run two epson 1400's, one using eboni 6 cart and one standard dyes. Recently the b&w printer has become possessed. It runs its startup sequence multiple times, at random. There is also a high pitched whine that comes from it when printing. When I use it, sometimes I get a full print, sometimes it stops and ejects the paper midway. I have reinstalled the driver several times, no change. Any suggestions? And if I do replace it, what would you recommend? I want the quality of the 1400 as far as image is concerned. My understanding is that the 1400 had the best image for a 13" printer. If there is a better choice now, I would live to know about it.

Thanks

Scott

If you want/need to keep all your inksets and curves, go to 1430:
same driver, same carts and heads.

If you want to take this
opportunity to get more and bigger carts: R2000.

Thanks for the idea, Seth!
Here is a question for the group. If I move to one of the larger
printers with the ABW inks, how does the quality of the print compare to
the 1400? My understanding is that the 1.5 picoliter is only available
on the 1400, which led to my choice in the first place. Are the 8+ tank
units better for B/W printing? What is the best printer for black and
white now?
Cheers,
Scott

R2000 is 1.5pl as well as 1400 and 1430 (also called 1500 in some
countries).

A2 printers are all 3.5pl.

I've used an Epson 1800 (1.5 picoliter) and currently use a 3880 and 4880. I use the 3880 for colour and for ABW on glossy papers, and the latter for B&W only (four black inks plus two colours for toning).

The only advantage of the 1.5 picoliter printer was that it could do a decent MK-black only print. I could never see any advantage in resolution, smoothness or gradation, and I can't comment on the colour since I am slightly red-green colour blind. (And the 1800 had a terrible paper-loading mechanism. Grrrr.)

The 3880 has been the most clog-free and reliable printer I have used. The ABW prints are excellent, and really do look like excellent traditional prints. My only tiny reservation concerns the use of non-carbon pigments to cool the print tone. (...and it doesn't have roll-paper capacity, of course)

If you find the warmth of MIS Eboni black on matte paper acceptable, you can get really lovely prints with Eboni (MK) plus Epson LK and LLK (essentially ABW without any colour pigments). Or you could do the same thing for glossy papers with Epson's Photo Black (PK).
