Focus magazine & David Spivak

Focus magazine & David Spivak

2013-04-19 by Arlene

In May 2006, like many other photographers, I had a nasty experience with Spivak. He even threatened me with his "lawyers." I'd forgotten about it until now. Today, seven years later I have a lengthy voice mail message from him, asking if I still had any residual anger about the "mishap." He begged me to return his call, offering some kind of amends, perhaps free advertising. He is worried that the posts on the internet reflect badly on his image and that of Focus. Hmmmm. I wonder how much it would cost me this time.

Arlene-
What exactly happened? My only experience with him was where he found my website and said he loved my work and wanted to "include" me in his magazine. Then he told me there was a price in which I laughed and said "no thanks".

When you Google David Spivak and Focus magazine you find many negative
posts about him - some worse than others. I too was offered a spread in the
magazine because my work was accepted for publication. It would cost only
$1500. Of course, I said no thanks. It looked like a ploy to lure
narcissistic dilettantes and desperate artists. After months of prolonged nasty
phone calls, finding the number not available, and emails, my portfolio of
prints was finally returned. In the end, I was out $35 for applying and
sending the portfolio, and $25 for return postage. That was 7 years ago
and I'd forgotten about it until the pleading phone call from him a few days
ago. He wants to get the negative posts off the Internet, but it seems
that what goes on the Internet stays on the Internet. It's sad, because
it is a beautiful magazine. Some subscribers have complained about not
receiving the magazines they paid for.

He tried to get us to advertise in it, he was relentless, he finally gave up.

Although what he is doing is not that far from some galleries today who can't make ends meet. Pay to play is everywhere. It might not be obvious, but it is happening.

If he was upfront about it perhaps he would have been more successful.

Mark -
You're right in that it is the way many galleries and publications are going these days. Adore Noir is also a beautiful publication and Chris is a genuinely nice guy but if I had the money to pay him to have my work noticed, then it has nothing to do with my work anymore.

Sorry, that you both had bad experiences with David. Seems he's becoming increasingly more desperate as of late. Apparently, he also has a LOT of publications under his belt. Is it about the artwork at all in his case? He never promotes or talks about photography on Facebook either.

And he's a Hofstra grad. Enough said (just kidding)
