Gamma 2.2 Options - Differences

I tried something I've not done before. Usually when I print using UT-14 and a curve on glossy or satin paper, I use printer controls with the color controls set for Gamma 2.2. As an experiment, I set the printer color management for none and set the color handling for PS then set the printer profile for Epson gray-Gamma 2.2 (ICC box). The resulting print with the PS controls is somewhat darker than the printer controls image and is not neutral in tone, it is slightly warm toned. Is there an explanation for this or is this just the difference between how the printer and PS drivers work?
