Epson P600 MK compared to Eboni v. 1.1

Epson P600 MK compared to Eboni v. 1.1

2015-05-03 by roark.paul@...

The new Epson MK for the P600 (and P800, I assume) is said to have a higher dmax than the old K3 MK. I just did a draw-down on Epson Hot Press Natural and have placed the scanned results here:

Epson is now explicit in their MSDS that the P600 MK is a carbon black.

The initial draw down appears to show an ink that is very close to MIS Eboni v. 1.1 (from STS Inks). The Eboni seems to have higher density, but the colors are much the same. I'll probably how the new Epson MK dilutes with the generic base next.

Paul,

Sure the draw downs may not represent inkjet squirting 1:1 but it would not surprise me if the higher Dmax Epson claims is more the result of another dithering/weaving near Dmax than an ink property. Time will tell when the new Eboni MK goes through an P600 or P800 MK channel.

Paul, if you can find the time, do you think you could explain what this "draw down" test is all about? I suspect the vast majority of subscribers to this list are more than a few steps behind you in your understanding of the technology of printer inks. A little more explanation would likely help a lot of us to move a step or two in your direction. Thanks for this and all your work.

See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Draw-Down-Procedure.pdf for a brief explanation of the "draw-down" procedure. It's just a quick way to quality control ink batches and also take a first look at a potentially interesting ink.

When I diluted the P600 MK to make the "LK" version of Eb6 (18%), the draw-downs for the P600 dilution was about one Lab B unit higher (warmer) than the Eboni dilution. The Eboni 18% had a Lab L = 25 compared to the P600 Lab L = 28.
