Long Time, No See!

Hi Gang -


I am writing with a very bold request but it's one that is more out of desperation than pretense (I think that's how I want to say it?) I have moved from New York to France, near Paris. Yes, it's true. I found love here and my heart had to take me. Prior to my move here, my Epson R2400's waste pad was pretty much done with and because money was, and still is, at an all-time low, I couldn't buy a new printer.


I am not legal to work here yet - am in the process of getting my permanent residency status now, but I am dealing with a severe economic crisis. (My husband is supporting us best he can and I am living off my credit card). I am trying to make an income selling prints I have already, but there are people that are asking to buy images I haven't printed yet. I do not want to find an expensive professional printer in Paris and I have contacted Epson directly, asking if there is somehow a way they would donate a small format pigment printer but they just led me to a program they have that gives donations to organizations and such. I am just an individual artist, so of course it doesn't apply.


So, I am here on this site asking if anyone has a used Epson pigment printer that works fine but is willing to donate to a poor ex-pat artist? As I mentioned above, a small format printer will be fine for now. I plan to buy, maybe the 4900 but right now, I plan to print A4..


And if you can not donate, if you have a suggestion of where I can find a used one inexpensively in France? I have to admit, I have not researched that yet.

Lots of luck.

You are not going to find an inexpensive printer in France.
Your best bet is to find a photographer who will print for you.

The VAT in France makes your idea impractical and without having working status, it would be illegal for you to sell prints. 
Your customers could simply refuse to pay you after you deliver the print.
It's like a gambling debt.... Uncollectible.

It will take a long time for you to clear the French laws regarding earning money in France.

I have spent a lot of time as an American photographer in France and I knew better than to try to compete with French photographers.
They will quickly put you out of business, and you will have to pay fines.

Hi Richard,

I will be legal to work in a few months actually. With marrying a French citizen, I am obtaining a regulatory visa while the permanent residence process goes through. I have seen the prices of Epson printers here, which are not that much more than in the US but the models seem very different. As for selling prints through my website, I don't think it is a problem short-term.

Try to find a local photo enthusiast club and explain the situation. You might find that either the club or one of the members has a capable printer and agrees on a low price to print for you for the time being. It may solve the printer maintenance and paper purchase issues too. The only con is lots of advices on anything you do in the process given by older members of that club. There might be more than that, you are in France.

Postpone purchases till you have VAT registration and proper bookkeeping, it will save you about 20% on the price in France I guess. Here it is 21% that is added.

BTW, keep an eye on the Epson P800 instead of the 4900, it will withstand intermittent use longer. The 4900 is a production machine and needs volume to survive.

Thank you so much for that info! What exactly is VAT registration? I am clueless to so many European policies, especially with money and taxes. And I will definitely take your advice about the Epson models.

By the way, this might be a stupid question but are the DuraBrite inks archival? I am thinking no but I keep reading different opinions online about them.

In France it is called TVA, a tax for added value. There will be webpages describing how that system works and where you have to register if you start commercial activities. With low turnover in the beginning and investment in equipment etc needed, it can make a difference as you actually get TVA money back from the tax men, up to certain amount you do not have to pay if there is little profit, the amount might differ in France. When the turnover grows you have to pay TVA though on the value you added by your work. This is all separate of income and property tax, etc. The TVA system makes companies a collecting instrument of consumer's tax for the authorities.

Durabrite inks are reasonably lightfast pigment inks but they have a small color gamut and are more suitable for matte printing than gloss printing. More leaning to the office printer than to the photo or art printers.
