hp designjet 500 with black ink

2015-09-14 by daniel andron

Hello from France,
I bought hp 500 for 1 $.
But i print always B/W on matt paper.
Also i want put black pigment ink in HP82 cartridge (C M Y).
Head for hp10 (black) 32 pico/l.
Head for hp82 color 4 pico/l.

Is Black Vivera or Ebony for Epson 1500 (1.5 pico/l) is good ?

Thank

Do not put Eboni in an HP printer. Eboni is made for Epson heads. The HP thermal heads require different ink formulations. For the HP printer, stay with the HP ink, or ink that is specifically designed for thermal heads.

Daniel,

says 18 picoliter droplet for the black head, 4 picoliter droplet for the color nozzles.

I have used the HP Z3200 Vivera pigment MK (matte black) ink in a similar 88 black head of the HP K5400 OfficeJet. But 9 picoliter droplet on the black side, possibly 6 picoliter on yellow. Cyan and magenta are 6 picoliter.
In the cyan channel of that printer the Z3200 Vivera pigment PK (photo black), on the magenta channel a 1/3 dilution of the PK, on the yellow channel a 1/9 dilution of the PK. Tweaked the channels with Photoshop ACV curves later on packed in an ICC profile together with a linearisation curve (Paul Roark + Roy to thank for these features). Matte (4ink), Gloss (3ink). Printing from Qimage Ultimate + Windows driver.
Both inks and ink medium are intended for the thermal heads that the mentioned HP models have.

I have done this experiment on the desktop model to see whether it would be possible on a 4 to 6 channel Designjet later on. I am quite convinced it would be possible. Main problem is the bigger droplet size of Designjets (other than the Z versions and the 130, 90 etc serie that have droplets 4-6 picoliter).

Merci Paul et Ernst,

I try purchasing 4 empty cartridges HP10 and HP82.
Vivera light gray on cyan
Magenta and yellow on dilution with kodak optimizer.
I'll post the results after testing ..
Thank you.

Daniel,

I think you could use bigger carts like the 130 ML carts of the Z3200 series. Replace the caps that hold the chip, it is all quite universal for HP carts throughout most Designjet models. The HP cartridges can be adapted for refilling too, the more as they are vertically inserted on the 500, filling them on the printer is not difficult either then. I could send you a picture of how to do that. Check Ebay for original HP Nr 70 carts that are expired, a cheap source and for this purpose good enough. You can even put the ink bag in an ultrasonic bath to give it a good refreshing mix.

If you only want to print on matte then a set of Vivera pigment MK + PK + 1/3PK +1/9PK is still possible, all 4 can be used. The PK then somewhat too dense for a quad set but if you select the High Quality Greyscale? mode (that mixes all the CMY channels for all the grey levels) it is not bad either which can be handy as some applications will not have Color Management to use curves or profiles. However better results with driver color mode + color managent + the appropriate partitioning Photoshop curves/profiles for a given paper quality. Another set, something like MK + 1/2PK + 1/4PK + 1/12PK (Paul will have better figures) may be wiser than using Light Grey ink, cheaper in use. If it has to be a Grey ink then use the Grey ink say like this: MK + Grey + 1/2Grey +1/4 Grey (Paul may have better figures again). Only printing in driver color mode with a matte media setting you will need curves then to get the right partitioned lay down of the grey inks.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

For Ernst
Pending order
The goal is MK + Grey + 1/2Grey +1/4 Grey

OK for "I could send you a picture of how to do that"
a+
