Daniel,

Since you are using a 1280 on a PC you can take advantage of a set of curves
that Tyler Boley kindly developed using Dan Culbertson's RGB soft proof
method, Profiler Pro, a Spectrocam photospectrometer and his long experience
writing CYMK separation curves for his 3000 with the Adobe Press Ready RIP.
These were done specifically done for the VM inks on Photo Rag and the 1280
under Windows.

I have posted the curves and driver settings in a zip file in the Files
section of the group homepage under:

Files > Inksets, reviews and techniques > MIS Variable Mix > 1280 PC MIS VM

If you had a copy of Profiler Pro you could also build a pretty accurate
monitor profile giving you the best WYSISYG tool for quad/hex work.

I think the crv08 curve is about the smoothest I have seen but I prefer the
slightly warmer tone of the wm02 curve.

If an image does not work well with one curve, try a different one or set up
two layers with different curves to combine the effects.

Let me know what you think.

And a big "THANKS" to Tyler.

Martin Wesley

Martin,
Thanks so much for the tip. These curves are
awesome! Wow, what a difference.. The crv08 curve is
*very* smooth and quite warm. The cld01 curve is
pretty smooth too, but seems to have blacker blacks.
I'm trying the rest of the curves now. The test
prints I've done are already much smoother than the
lightjet prints I had made of the same image.
What color space do you print with? Adobe RGB 1998
seems to be working fine, just curious, though.
Thanks again, and thanks to Tyler where ever you are!

Daniel,

I am glad they are working for you. Send Tyler a "thank you" since they are
his creation. They were originally done from sRGB space to be in line with
Paul's curves. I don't think that it matters much from what I have seen and
heard. The Adobe is much more common and I believe Paul is planning on
standardizing on that.

The cld01, mw, plat (for platinum) and the Wm are just initial attempts that
were never refined. I find the 08 to be the smoothest and the mw02 not far
behind.

One of the nice things is that these fall in between the tone of Paul's
curves giving some additional subtle variations to use.
