soft print

2017-06-07 by paulmwhiting@...

I'm working with a jpg from my Nikon D90, it measures 4288 x 2848 pixels, ie a 12Mb file. I converted it to b/w using a channels plugin in PSElements 13 and printed it with QuadTone RIP current version in an Epson 1400 on a Windows 10 computer. (Had to convert it to tiff to get my sizing and margins right.)

The resulting print, on Letter size Epson Presentation Matt seems a bit soft. Have had trouble lately getting a good nozzle check in my Cyan position. The upper line is almost empty, missing all but about 2 or 3 dashes. Would a missing line in one of the six carts cause a soft print? Plus, the sky is not as smooth as I'm used to seeing, it's a little blotchy.

Thank you,

Paul

For the best print, you obviously want a perfect nozzle check. The paper, however, might be contributing to the blotchy look of the print.

Thanks, Paul,

I take your point on paper choice. I was simply grabbing what was at hand, I printed again using my usual Premier Art Fineart 205. Same sky issues, hard to replicate it on a monitor. About half the sky was not the usual smoothness I've come to expect. "Blotchy" is the only word I can think of. Must be that cyan with the missing line.

I think I'll have to pop for a 1430. The 1400 is about four years old. For that print I just described, the K cart had no nozzle pattern at all, After about three cleaning routines it finally gave me a pattern for the K position. The cyan position was still missing the top line. I've tried just about everything for a good cyan pattern - the see-saw underhead technique, overnight soaking of the parking pad, cleaning nozzle tips, wiper blade, cleaning cartridges, purge patterns...

Thank you,

Paul W.

How often do you use the printer? Leaving it sit idle for too long is often a killer. I have my glossy carbon variable tone inkset in my 1430 now, and I'll be running it ASAP, since your story reminded me that it's time. I try to run it once a week. I know people who do not even like to go that long with an idle printer.

I fire it up 2 - 3 times a week, usually just a nozzle check. If I get a bad pattern (worse than the one I described in my original post), I'll run a cleaning routine or two. Sometimes I'll run a print.

Note: since my last post, I discovered a setting in my camera for adjusting the sharpness. It's at a default setting, which most users on the Internet say is too soft. On a scale of 0 - 9, the default setting is 3 and most folks bump it up to around 5.

This is very encouraging news... I was picturing a worst case, where I had to send it to Nikon. I'm going to shoot with a setting of 5 for a while and report back. It may be a while.

Thank you,

Paul
