William Turner and Royal Plush are nice, but not nearly as white as the
Photo Matte. The Albrecht Durer is one of the better selling papers, but
I've only got a tiny little swatch of it, and can't tell too much from that.
Does the Hahnemuhle have another name other than 230? Not familiar with that
one.

Hi Jerry,

The swatch I got of the Hahnemuhle only says 230. Like you I was
relying on the numbers to indicate a heavy paper but apparently a
person can't go by that. I would like a heavy paper about 250-300gsm,
similar to Torchon, with a texture that won't flake. You have seen
the images on my site that I want to do as Duotones and my digital
work as watercolors and acrylic paints. Some of these I will be using
canvas but not all. As I am new to printing I really appreciate the
help you have given me as well as others. Relying on your experience
and others has helped me make fewer mistakes as well as costly
mistakes. I know most of the list members aren't interested in
duotones but if they could recommend some papers they really like and
why I'm sure they will most likely work with my duotones. Thank you
again.

Best regards,

Tim

Tim, I suppose the best thing you can do is simply get a bunch of sampler
kits of about 2 sheets each and see which ones you like.

A lot of the Hahnemuhle papers seem to have had flaking problems, but may be
corrected by now. You should like any of the following papers, all of which
make beautiful prints with good blacks.

Torchon/Royal Riviera
Legion Photo Matte
Orwell/Royal Plush/William Turner/Frankfurt/German Etching
Epson Archival Matte
Epson Watercolor
Japan 90 (tokinoko)

And of course hundreds of others. What Some love, others will hate, so you
really should get the samples.

Re: [Digital BW] 4 Steadman re: papers

I think if you want less texture than Torchon, then the two you mentioned are going to look too much like "watercolor paper" to you. They produce a texture similar to Arches watercolor cold press. At least in my opinion.

I would use the Orwell paper (or better yet the rag sister William Turner 310) and print with it for the fine art look and feel. It is relatively smooth compared to Torchon but has a little tooth to it so it hides dither and piezo tracks (if you have any) quite well. And the image looks "painted on" which I personally prefer. Looks "arty."

If you are using the PiezoColor inks, try the Brightcube Eclipse. It looks and feels very nice. Be warned though that it does not like PiezoBW inks as well.

Why not just buy the Conetech sample kit and try them all. That is what I did. It is very good idea to print the very same image on the various papers so you can make an apples to apples comparison of how the tone/texture/tooth/weight influence your impressions and preferences. Keep them in a binder for future reference.

Good luck,
Steadman

  Steadman et al,

I use duotones to print my B/W. It is a selenium-tone effect. I like
a textured paper that produces deep blacks and rich grays. The
torchon that I use is great but for some images the texture is too
much. Do you have any suggestions for textured papers that might be
suitable. I like fairly heavy papers. 2 that interest me are
Hahnemuhle 230 and Albrecht Durer. The Legion Matte you and Jerry
like so much sounds great but is likely too smooth for my needs. Any
suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
