CFS Carts Running out of ink

CFS Carts Running out of ink

2002-04-01 by donbga

Hi Group,

I'm using the MIS CFS cart system with my Epson 1160. I've had this
setup for a short while sort I'm relatively new to this setup. Last
week the Eposn print driver gave a warning message that I had run out
of ink for the color ink carts. I had to "replace" the carts to make
the printer happy. Is this normal for continous inking systems?

The folks at MIS said that the printer counts drops of ink used and
will report an empty cartridge after some count has been exceeded.
Should I "replace" the carts when the ink level indicators appear low
in the driver interface dialog to preempt this problem?

Thanks,

Don Bryant

If I understand you correctly, you're getting a message telling you
that you're running out of ink when in fact you still have plenty of
ink in your CFS bottles. What you need to do is lightly push down
the "sponges" that sit at the front of the carts on your system. This
will signal to the printer that you have "reloaded" it with full
carts. I think MIS discusses this somewhere in their directions for
CFS setup. BTW, a few months agoI confronted the same situation and
someone on this list helped me out.

Unless you are worried about the printer doing something strange,
just wait until it reports out of ink, then remove and replace both
blocks holding the switches down. As the printer runs through a
priming/cleaning cycle for both cartridges when one is replaced, this
cuts down on ink waste.

In a CIS system, you should never "replace" a cartridge, just reset the
CIS by lifting the little sponge blocks and resetting them back down, if
you have an older printer, and if you have the 1280, you should never
have to do a thing, it is all automatic. The chip always reads that the
cartridge is full.

OOps, I see you have the MIS CIS system, not the nomorecarts/Niagara
system. The above only applys to the Nomorecarts/Niagara system.

Yes that is what I did, I'm sorry I didn't make that clear.

One word of warning about lifting and reinserting the sponge on
your MIS CFS carts. I wiggled the cart while trying to move a
sponge and lost vacuum in my system. I had to replace the
cartridge and tubing before I got everything working again. Not a
pretty process. Frank
