Shelby
I just set up my S9000 over the weekend. Installation was very easy -- no problems. Head alignment procedure took about 2 minutes. The inital set up or when I first turned it on was noisier than I thought it should be ---- The actual printing of images is quiet. Output a PDF I always use to evaluate printers / inks / papers -- set to glossy paper --a 8.5 x 11 print took just under 2 minutes. I also output a 13 x 18 print and it took about 3 min 45 sec. There is an updated driver (version 1.52) at the Canon website that also includes a profile for matte paper. I too can't wait for MIS inksets to be out for this unit.

I am seriously considering the S9000.

Any advice of thoughts would be appreciated. I sounds like MIS and others

I'm very tempted by the S9000 too, but there does not seem to be any availability of B&W inks for that printer. Where did you get the info that 3rd party ink mfgs were going to support the Canon?

That would be idea! Otherwise I'd have to go with Epson....

Thanks,

Re: [Digital BW] Canon S9000

I am new to all this, but very interested in the possibility of the
inksets. I am also using a Mac ( iMac & iBook)

I haven't purchased Photoshop yet, but I need to do that also, I
presume.

Very interested in doing some B&W.

Thanks again.

Richard
A few days ago Paul Roark mentioned in a post that he had been talking to the MIS people about inksets for Canon printers. There were working on it but no real concrete dates to make it available. I bought the Canon anyway. If and when MIS comes out with the inks I'll switch it over to B&W. For now I'll continue to use my Epson 880 (8.5 x11)

I've been told by key individuals at MIS, Lyson, and MediaStreet that
they will support the Canons...

MediaStreet is already shipping empty cartridges..

Luminos is "probably" going to offer support,,

Ilford says, with cartridges, their inksets could be used... Including
their monokrome set.. They would like to offer their inks in
1270/1290/870 cartridges anyway.. They just need a stable source of
empties..

Don or Other,

Isn't it possible to make good BW prints on s9000 with some effort in
PhotoShop (I read some tutorials which claim it is possible)? Or is it a
waste of effort?

Yes it is.. They look great... I wouldn't call them smack dab neutral
though... and no 6 color ink set will match the tonality range of a
monochrome hex inkset

and the inks are still dye-based, so the archival concerns rise for
fine-art printers..

The S900 is a great printer out of the box, but there isn't a one-stop
solution to printing yet... if there ever will be..

I have not tried to make a B&W print on the S9000 because I have other dedicated B&W printers setup. But I will attempt it over the next several days as time permits.

Shelby,

Just a note. MIS does not support any printers. They simply provide ink. The workflows that are on their site were developed by enthusiasts who received no pay from MIS. If you go with the Canon you will be on your own do develop a workflow which you should be able to do using RGB separation curves but you need to dive in and do them yourself.

I am seriously considering the S9000.

Any advice of thoughts would be appreciated. I sounds like MIS and others
are going to soon be supporting this printer.

  Thanks

Thanks,

I am just learning about all of this, but I like the six independent
cartridges and I have been happy with other Canon eqmt I have. I have a Mac
and haven't gotten Photoshop yet, but plan to.

I appreciate all the help from folks here.
