MIS Gloss Coat

MIS Gloss Coat

2002-04-24 by Todd Flashner

Has anyone tried the MIS Gloss Coat?

From their website:

"MIS Gloss Coat Sample - Gloss Coat is a clear odorless coating which can be
applied to a glossy archival pigmented print to eliminate dull spots and to
seal the surface to make the print more durable. Requires a second printer
to apply. Comes in a 2 oz sample bottle, virgin empty cartridge not
included.

$5.00"

Sounds like a good idea but I wonder about clogs, and for that matter how
does one do a nozzle check???

Todd...

Didn't someone mention a 'wouldn't it be cool' scenario regarding that very
same thing a while back... coating paper with a desktop printer (it was
probably Martin)... how would you keep the heads from drying with this stuff
in them, with a spray can you can clear the nozzle after use so it doesn't
dry.

Todd,
I inquired about this product about a month ago. They are having
problems with it (exactly what I don't know), but for now, from what
I understand they are no longer selling it... it does sound like a
terrific idea though... When I have the time and resources, I would
like to follow up on it, perhaps picking the brains of MIS. It does
sound to me potentially the best way of consistently applying a top
coat to a print....

Why doesn't anyone laminate their prints? I've asked about it
before and got no reply. Do you have an opinion on it? Has anyone
tried it? It's done a lot with outdoor color inkjet-wide format and
such but I see nothing about it here. Can anyone tell me why? Does it
suck, not work, look lame, cheap? Anyone? Anyone?

Thanks, I feel so much better after a good rant.

Didn't think you were serious.

all of the above...

I laminate my commercial covers when they are being used under certain
conditions at the request of my clients only. Lamination may have come a
long way but it is still a plastic wrap... good for commercial and
educational purposes only in my opinion... not photogaphic fine art.

I haven't tried it, but from what I've seen I think it is just not the "fine
art" look many of us go for here. It's plasticky.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: MIS Gloss Coat--Easy Coating on Pearl Paper

2002-04-24 by Robert G. Morrison

Todd and others,

Try using Brightcube Semi-Matte paper with either the FS or FS-N inks. I'm
assuming it would also work with VM. The paper is a microporus surface on a
"silver-halide" paper. I'm trying to get details about the paper
stock...its not RC...but it is not acid free and does have brighteners (like
most traditional photo papers). I get beautiful prints with the Piezo
Driver on Epson Photo Paper setting. The FS is warm...and the FS-N is
neutral. Uncoated dmax is 1.9. I simply spray with four quick (30 sec
apart) lite coats of Krylon UV resistant spray. I have no problem getting
even coats that you don't see (unlike the old Kodak Ultima...which was a
bear to coat). The surface is pearl and stays that way. Coated dmax bumps
up to 2.05. The coated print is completely smear resistant.

I think this is absolutely the easiest way to get rich looking prints. I'm
seriously considering this for my portfolio.

Well ... i do not laminate, but on occasion for shows i have the prints (usually large format ones) mounted behind 1/4 or 1/8 inch plexiglas depending on the size. these get framed and require no further handling for the show which is extremely practical. supposedly (according to the service provider) it also increases the print durability. but i would not do the thin-layer lamination just on prints ... i kind of do not like the results

And no Plasticky feel I'll bet. Do you wait any amount of time for
the print to dry or you coat immediately?

Is this a new paper? I've only seen their satine velvet and eclipse satine

Jeff, check out the recent (ongoing?) discussion on the Epson 9000 list.

Relatively new. It has the same coating as ProPhoto Silk, a lightweight
paper that they have sold for about 6 monthes. The Semi-Matte is much more
substantial. Very nice...well worth a look.

They look like silver prints to me. I let them dry overnight...being
careful not to rub the surface.

MIS Gloss Coat

2002-09-23 by colingruk

Has anyone had experience of

<<MIS Gloss Coat Sample - Gloss Coat is a clear odorless coating
which can be applied to a glossy archival pigmented print to
eliminate dull spots and to seal the surface to make the print more
durable. Requires a second printer to apply. Comes in a 2 oz sample
bottle, virgin empty cartridge not included>>

from http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/accessory.html -
I have an otherwise redundant Epson EX?

My apologies if this has been raised before, in which case a link
would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Colin
