Mark,

Thanks for the tip. Everything sounds great except for that "45 to 75 years" print life. That will certainly fly in the realm of fine art color prints but it is not going to cut it for B&W. He also didn't mention anything about metamerism in the prints so I wonder if they have come up with a fix.

If the metamerism is okay this would be perfect commercial B&W work.

I will probably buy one for the color if not for the B&W.

Seems to be the replacement for the 2000P? And scroll down
the page, to see how they're dealing with B/W neutrality.

Epson will happily leave you and the rest of the small group with higher life
expectations that this on your own, while they make money with the general
market. Considering the error range in estimages above 45 years, I'm not sure
that your high ideals are all that meaningful.

Ouch that burns. I don't know if Martin is going to reply to this
but I will. Before you burst into righteous indignation (or is it too
late for that) you might want to find out a little more info. The
lightfastness they are giving out is conspicuously lacking test
conditions. I will bet that 45 to 75 years is going to be indoor
light and probably behind glass. DEMAND test conditions for any
lightfastness or archivability claims. I can make a print last for
50,000 years with zero fade-stored in vacuum and complete darkness
but who cares.
Did you notice that the lightfastness numbers dropped significantly
from the 2000P inks? Wonder why? My sources indicate something I'll
pose as a question. How do you get pigmented inks to look really
bright and with a little switch of black inks print on matte or gloss
but in the process lose a huge chunk of lightfastness? ....Give
up? ......Come on don't die out on me here...OK I'll tell you- you
make a dye/pigment hybrid ink. Excuse some of us for wanting a
solution that's more that smoke and mirrors.

The printer and software are a quantum leap in the right direction
and most nondiscerning users will probably be happy with it but don't
get histerical if people who have professions and reputations to
uphold don't jump on the bandwagon just yet. It's all just the
typical pre-release hype anyway.

There seems to be different longevity numbers floating around depending on
which country the information is coming from. In my forays into the
Japanese site for the 4000 model, I saw the number 75 and since I don't
read Japanese, figured this was the upper limit of print life.

UK sites have used the 45 to 75 year span.

And now the US press release that appeared on the businesswire.com site
states "prints lasting up to 80 years on EPSON Watercolor Paper and black
and white prints lasting up to 100 years on various fine art papers."

The only test conditions mentioned are "prints displayed indoors, under glass."
