I tried MIS (vmHex) inks in my 7000 a couple months ago. They had a
green cast. I sent them back.

Richard,
that seems to be unbelievable, as you have the option to change
the tone from very warm to very cool. I´ve never seen that green
cast with MIS VM on my 7500.
Nevertheless I switched to MIS FS and IP 4 meanwhile and find
the tonal range not only smooth (no posterization) but also rather
neutral in tone.
If I compare them to my older piezo prints from an 1160 the latter
do have a very s l i g h t green cast, while the MIS FS prints
seem to be *dead neutral*.
I know....color perception is very relative...kinda chameleon-thing,
no?

No green cast on my 7000 with either the MIS FS or FSN inks. I wonder if
Mr. Wolfson is viewing his prints under fluorescent lighting which with
certain color temperatures might render any print with a green cast.

RE: [Digital BW] Greenies with MIS-FS?

2002-05-02 by Richard Wolfson

No, this wasn't a lighting thing, or a chamelion thing, or a color
perception or personal thing. These were pre-filled Epson 9000
cartridges from MIS, and on Museo at least, the images looked decidedly
green in *any* light -- low voltage halogen, daylight, ott-lite. Each
person who saw the prints said something like "Yuk, those look really
green!"

I cannot say with certainty what caused this. I assume it was some kind
of contamination in the ink, or a bad batch, or whatever. I called MIS
and explained the problem. They said "send 'em back," no hassle or
push-back whatsoever, and credited my account.

By the way, the variable-tone option Bernd notes can't remove a green
cast. In terms of L*a*b* coordinates, the variable tone gives you (more
or less) +/- b* control, and the green cast is a -a* problem.

I had been thinking for some time about blending my own ink set, so
after this happened, I went ahead and did it. Initial results are *very*
encouraging; I'll post a more complete report when I have more complete
results.

Just to cover the bases...

What is the history of the printer? How old, more important- what ink
has previously run through if any and for how long? f you use the
Piezo driver do things change? How old is the ink? Are you using carts
or a CIS or a CFS? If CIS or CFS, how long has it been installed and
how many bottles of ink have gone through it? What is humidity in
room?

IMHO PhotoRag looks the best in any lighting conditions especially Florescent
w/ FS inks. Piezo inks also look greenish under florescents on many of the
papers. A Couple months back I tested all the art and photo papers under
florecents and myself and several others picked the Photo Rag prints, Prior
to this test I shipped some prints on Orwell w MIS FS inks to an out of
state exhibit. I showed up for the opening and was horrified that a lot of
the display areas where lit with florecent lighting and my prints looked very
greenish, especially mixed in with two other silver printers work. I do
believe MIS FS inks take longer to "cure" or warm up than Piezo inks.
