I tried for some time to get good B&W prints from color inksets, and
ultimately gave up. That is why most of us on this list use one of the
"quad" inkset solutions.

I recently received a wedding invitation that used one of my early B&W
prints that had been done with a color inkset. I thought it looked really
good when I shipped it a couple of years ago. However, even though it had
been in dark storage, I was embarrassed that my name was on the back of the
card I received. Although the sender seemed to think the card was good
enough for a wedding invitation, I was acutely aware of color tints and
crossovers.

I know this is probably not what you wanted to hear, but if want to avoid a
lot of trouble and get good B&W prints, I'd recommend a quad inkset approach
with a printer that is well-supported by the various workflows that are used
here.

RE: [Digital BW] Simply please? - 1270 & 870

2002-05-07 by Paul Roark

Bert,

I have a fair number of people asking me what to buy to get into B&W
printing. In the past, the 1160 was the standard, but with it's demise,
there is a bit of a gap. The 1280s are great, but not cheap.

MIS believes that refurbished 1270s and 870s (which hopefully will use the
same variable-tone control curves) are the best deals now. Frankly,
however, I've not been satisfied with the curves for those machines.

So, MIS is sending me an 870 tomorrow. I'll refine the MIS VM curves for
that platform -- it's much easier to do so in-house. Assuming that the "no
color adjustment" setting makes these curves cross-platform, the curves I
can do in-house will then be good for the 1270 and 870, whether on PC or
Mac.

With the caveat that there are several assumptions above, what we are trying
to do is set up the 1270/870 as a platform that is affordable and can put
out great MIS VM and VM-Sepia prints. I suspect I'll also do an Epson FS
workflow for the platform. So, at this point I am recommending the 1270 and
870 with MIS Vm inks (see www.inksupply.com). Be patient, however, about
the quality of the existing control curves. I'll be upgrading them ASAP.

Paul:

Are you planning to "profile" the FS inkset based on your proposed
different ink positions or are you going to experiment with changing
the FS ink densities at their current positions?

Thanks.

Probably both. I'll likely see how your profile for the altered ink
positions works first. However, I think that a "no workflow" Fs inkset for
the modern hextones would help a lot of people going with less confusion
than now exists with all these curves. Of course, how much time is
available is always a variable.

Imageprint is about (I think next week) to release their product for the
1270/1280/1290 that supports the current FS ink sets. It will include
profiles for most of the papers that you all are currently using including
Epson/Hahnemuhle/Legion and Brightcube. Support for the VM ink set is to
follow.

Paul:

I agree that a "no curves" FS inkset would be ideal. But I am afraid
that this will require a whole lot of tweaking with the inkset
densities. Even using "no color correction" in the Epson driver,
cross-platform uniformity may be difficult (not to mention the day to
day and printer to printer variations). I guess there ARE 3 working
days per solar day and thus 21 working days per solar week....

Robert,

That's excellent. I hope they extend the support to the 3000, 7000 and
others.

I still think that a free, open entry-level approach is needed. However,
for those who do a lot of printing or for whom the price is no problem, I
have no doubt that a professional RIP with lots of paper profiles will be
the way to go.

About $500. $1500 for the 7000/7500.

They have a 7000 and 9000 class driver already. I don't know about the
3000...its rather old technology...they aren't supporting the 1160 either.

Unless you are content to print on EAM...or have a whole lot of time and
money for paper I think spending the money for either Piezo or Imageprint is
the best thing a newbe can do...buying the piezo driver was the best money I
spent in this whole venture. I would have never gotten to where I am now
using curves...I simply don't have enough time to develop and tweak them for
all the different papers that I would have liked to try. Having all of
those paper profiles has allowed me to try so many papers with good results.
In my opinion you simply don't get a feel for what quad printing can be if
you only print on EAM.

I think that imageprint looks like a good alternative...it allows
considerably more control than the piezo driver, no microbanding and better
dmax on the same papers. When the VM upgrade is ready...I'd say that would
be the ultimate quad print engine. I'll report when I get a copy...but I
trust Mike's appraisal using the FS-N inks.

Re: Imageprint 4 (ColorByte Homepage)

This may have been posted already but the ColorByte (Imageprint)
folks have a page devoted to "new ehancements for quadtone printing"
regarding their Imageprint 4.0. It has a little information on
grayscale ICC profiling in the software.
