No black ink

No black ink

2002-05-15 by James Haney

I am having a problem.

System: Epson 1160, No-more-carts CIS, Piezography 6 on a Macintosh.

Symptom: the black position ink isn't printing. The 3 grey inks are fine.

Other information: I don't think it is a clog (I am pretty good at clearing
those up)

A few weeks ago I accidentally let the black ink run out and got air in the
lines. I attempted to re-prime the system but couldn't create a complete
vacuum like the first time I started the system up. No matter how may times
I drew air out of the tube it never resisted enough as I expected it to. I
went ahead and dropped the tube in the new ink bottle and it seemed to prime
OK and I got some fine prints out.

However, I went to print this week and got quite a few clogged heads on the
black ink head. Windex, cleaning cycles, purge pages etc. didn't really
clear anything up so I tried the windex on a paper towel with light
scrubbing technique which left the paper tower with quite a bit of ink on
it.

After running a new cleaning cycle and windex on the pad overnight I now
have virtually black no ink at all.

I tend to think that my black cartridge has a bad seal somewhere.

Is there any way to fix this or replace the cartridge on the CIS?

I experienced the same problem with the yellow position last week. To
test the problem I inserted the Cleaning Cartridges and after running
a cleaning cycle, I did a nozzle check... it was perfect. I put the
problem cart back in and once again, nothing. So, I replaced the bad
cart and haven't had any problems since.
