posterization and cone inks?

posterization and cone inks?

2002-05-16 by David Myers

okay, I need some help. I have run the 21 step wedge and it looks fine when
i print photorag 188 and cone inks. The image I am trying to print looks
fine on the screen with very smooth skin tones. When I print it, there is
considerable posterization. what gives?

Do a search for "DSS" "Density Shift syndrome" "Hayes Syndrome"
"Greenies", mainly on the piezo list, although some mention of it is
on record on this list as well.

You want to rule out DSS as the culprit, and then go onto other
possibilities.

David,

You said you can print the 21 step wedge, but not the photo, then
the problem may be with the photo. Although it may look good on
your montitor that does not mean it is as smooth as the 21
steps.

Test. Paste the 21 step into the photo and print them both at the
same time, and if the 21 step is not posterized, then the image
is at question. So try that.

Did you change the gamma and ink densities of the ICQ profile
by accident? They should be 1.0 and 100. Changing them will
result in effects that can look like posterization.

Maybe you did too heavy a twist with curves or levels?

BTW, is it just this photo or all photos?
