good paper to start with?

good paper to start with?

2002-05-19 by rich8155

Hello all, I've read the many suggestions for papers on the Cone/MIS
sites but would like your opinions on a good one to start with for
someone who has never done this kind of printing before. I'll be
using an Epson 1160, a Cone driver and MIS FS ink. I realize that
which paper to use is a very subjective opinion and with time,
experience and trying different papers I'll gravitate towards which
I like to use best, but in the mean time I would like suggestions
for a paper to use to help me judge my printer's quality and output,
get a feel for the ink, and overall just get some decent results to
get me really encouraged for more. I have have some Epson Matte
Paper - Heavyweight and also some Legion Photo Matte already.
Comments on either of those? Others?

Thanks.

Richard

I use the MIS VM inks, so my info might not be super-useful.

However, I've printed with both of the papers you mentioned. I
_really_ like the Legion Photo Matte, though it's a little pricey. The
Epson Heavyweight Matte I don't like so well - Epson Archival Matte is
much nicer, and not tooooooo much more expensive.

My choice right now - EAM for proofing, Somerset Velvet for final
prints, Epson Watercolor when I need to save money on less critical
final prints. (But I really don't like the epson watercolor, and have
basically decided to use it only for accordian-book projects, where
it's important to keep costs down because it's too easy to screw up.)

Rick-

You can get sample packs of paper pretty cheaply. Cone has a lot of
relabled Hahnemuhle papers (if you join NAPP for $99 a year, you get
a 10% discount).

If you are looking for economy, there is nothing cheaper/better in
price range than Epson Enhanced Matte (formerly EAM)...but it does
have an Epson logo on the back, which may not sit well on your
professional jobs. In that case, try the Cone Matte or Legion Photo
Matte.

We talked earlier about making glossy prints...the only way you will
be making glossy with the MIS inks is to spray them after
printing...again something you may not want to do in the volume you
print.

The Epson heavyweight ARCHIVAL matte, now relabeled "Endurance" is
thicker and whiter than the epson heavyweight, which isn't heavyweight.
The Archival is made for pigment inks, the heavyweight for dye inks.
Suggest the Archival Matte or Endurance for your printing. This paper
also has good blacks. Photomatte is also excellent, both thicker and
whiter than the epson archival matte.
