Virus/Worm Caution

Virus/Worm Caution

2002-06-05 by Martin Wesley

All,

For the last several days I have received 2 or 3 e-mail every evening containing a worm virus known as W32.Klez.H@mm. Each night it is from a different e-mail address. The e-mails are addressed to my two personal addresses and to me as list owner of this group. So I suspect that some group member or former group member's computer is infected with this worm virus.

(The virus is not coming in with messages from the list. Yahoo has antivirus software in place to block that.)

You can read all about this virus at:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@...

The damage it causes in rated as moderate but it is difficult to remove if your computer becomes infected. It is one of those worms that resides on your computer, searches for e-mail addresses and then does mass mailings to those addresses using randomly selected files from your computer for the text, itself as an automatically executing attachment, and a randomly selected e-mail address from your computer as the sender. At this point it is a nuisance as my Norton Anti-virus cannot do a repair but can only quarantine the file so I have to delete it manually.

So everyone please take this as a reminder to use antivirus software, keep it turned on and keep your virus definition files updated regularly. All of us who are very active on the Internet need to protect ourselves and our friends.

Thanks,
Martin Wesley

Martin,

I too have been recipient of emails from someone with Klez. The important
point to note is that, whilst the email may appear to come from different
users in e.g. Outlook list-view, the _actual_ original sender can often be
seen inside the Header of the email. In outlook, you can right-click on an
email (in list mode) and view 'Options...'.

The sting in the tail for me was that whilst I received empty emails,
someone else always received an email _purporting_ to be from me, but with
the virus attached. Again, viewing the email header showed the real source
of the email.

There is also often a subtle difference in the way that users are identified
in such emails - often being seen as their email address, rather than e.g.
their 'name' like Nij in my case.

SO... please to all, don't rush to blame on such an issue, as the virus does
like to cause that :( However, do notify the 'apparent' sender, and also
the actual originator. If it turns out you are the originator, download some
fixes from the internet (ideally on a clean PC) and disconnect from the
internet until you have cleaned all your machines of the virus. That means
disconnect your modem, ADSL cable, whatever. There is NO reason why you
can't clear this worm in one day flat and without infecting a single other
person... though it would really help if people would apply security patches
etc to Outlook / Internet Explorer etc that prevented auto-runnign scripts
and so on.

Best regards,
nij

Sorry, I should also have stressed that this incident was historic, and not
related to this 'outbreak' that might be associated with Digital BW.

How do we know if we have the worm/virus?

Does it execute even if the e-mail and/or attachment is not opened?

Martin,

It is impossible to tell where the worm comes from because it mimics or
spoofs addresses. I've had some say that I sent an e-mail to China etc. It
has attacked over one million computers since April 27. My anti-virus
program ( PC Cillin 2002 ) deletes the mail as soon as it arrives and just
leaves a note to advise me. It can't be cleaned but is stopped and deleted
if your program is current, Not to worry.

Paul,

If you have up to date virus software and definitions, a virus scan of your
drives would turn it up.

It tries to execute when you open the e-mail but like many people I use the
preview window in Outlook Express, so its appearance in the preview
constitutes opening the e-mail and the attachment tries to run. My software
pops up a box asking if I want to run it or save it to disk. I close this
and delete the e-mail message. Since I have Norton Antivirus installed, the
attachment gets quarantined before the e-mail is accepted and I am not at
risk. Just unnerved and pissed. I will spare you my opinion of the people
who write these things.

Another nice feature with the Norton (and I imagine the other antivirus
packages offer it to) is that you can set it to monitor outgoing e-mail for
viruses. With that enabled you would help prevent one of the worm type
viruses from spreading to other computers if yours became infected.

Nij,

I will check the next one that comes in. I had thought this one completely
covered it's trail but if I check a few. If the same sender keeps coming up
that may narrow it down. I have to say I have been reluctant to click
anything on these things other than to get them deleted ASAP.

Good advice. If your computer is infected, the Symantec site gives you
step-by-step instruction and the software tools to clean your computer for
free.

I don't mind to try anti-virus software again, but I've tried it for
two non-consecutive years, each time not renewing it because it never
found anything. My small, very local ISP has, however, short-stopped
a few infected e-mails on their way to my mailbox. The rest of my
good fortune is, I think, probably due to my not using Microsoft's
Outlook Express (I got Eudora because there's good supplementary
documentation - Adam Engst's VSQ Guide - for it.). Maybe due to my
using a Mac. Whatever, I think I'll probably also replace Microsoft's
Internet Explorer, although I like it well enough, with Opera. But
that's not to say I won't warm up Norton's Anti-Virus software; I
probably should update Norton Utilities anyway, unless there's now
something better for a Mac. I'd be glad for any advice or suggestions
about any of this.

Sam,

You are definitely in the low risk category. Since there are so many more
Windows machines than Macs they and their common software are mostly
targeted. Like you I went for years without ever having my virus detection
software find anything but in the last couple of years of using it to
monitor my e-mail has saved me (and everyone I send e-mail to) from being
infected.

I guess it is like health insurance. You pay for it and hope you never need
it.

I have no idea what the best package is for the Mac but I recommend you have
something running.
