[Digital BW] Re: How´s the VM Sepia?
2002-06-09 by Paul Roark
A little more detail and correction:
I just used the X-rite spectrophotometer to measure the 870 test strips
printed with the MIS VM curves and MIS VM-Sepia inkset. The "warm" peak in
the shadow tones on the neutral test strip is about at 85% and is less than
0.01 unit more than the black warmth. (At other days it has measured a bit
more than one; the X-Rite is also not perfectly stable even though regularly
calibrated.) So, averaging the readings, I'd say to expect a warm peak of
about 0.045 at about 85%, which is about 0.01 more than the black. The 870
neutral test strip ("warm" curve) is about 0.01 unit cool at 50%, and is
also about 5% darker than my target at that point. The steps and ramp are
quite even, however.
The "cool" curve 870 test strip hits a maximum warmth at 35% and is quite
even through most of its range. I'd like to see the maximum tone at 50%,
but it's close enough that I'm now probably not going to bother with the
curves. They are all a bit on the dark side (max. 5% too dark relative to
my target), but that may be other variables, and they are consistent with
each other.
So, what you see posted in the Files section is what you get for now and the
near future. I'm moving on.
