Tim,
I visited your site at your invitation and like your work. Very nice quiet images and well done web gallery.

There have been many messages/notes on these papers written over at the Piezo3000 list. Go over there and check back over the last few months for comments. Just use the "search" feature of the list and type in your paper names and you will get comments and profiles to use etc...

I think any of the Hahnemuhle papers would work fine for your images. I have never used the cotton canvases so cannot comment on them.

If I were limited to only one paper for fine art prints (from your list) I would choose the Torchon 285. It is not as smooth as Turner 300 but has a "handmade paper" look to it and print qualities I find very attractive. Albrecht Durer and Hahnemule 230 have a pronounced "watercolor paper" texture which is very apparent in a print. Torchon texture is subtle and "disappears" in the image. At least on all of my images.

Turner has a smooth surface that also has just a very fine coating texture that aids in hiding any "digital print" look. A little texture is a fine thing when doing the inkjet prints. Some papers are too smooth in my opinion.

Good luck and do go read the archives.

Has anyone on this list used any of these papers? I would appreciate
knowing what inks you used with them and how you made out.

  1.Albrecht Durer 210
  2.Hahnemuhle 230
  3.Torchon 285
  4.Turner 300
  5.Hahnemuhle 100% cotton canvas 580
  6.Hahnemuhle cotton/poly canvas 575

I am considering using MIS or Generations inks with my 1280. Piezo is
also a possibility but cost is also a factor. I am an amateur
photographer and this is a hobby. If I could impose a little further,
my url is www.portraitsofnature.net, you can see from the images on
it the kind of images I will be printing. If any of you have
recommendations, based on the type of photography I do, regarding
inks and paper, please let me know. Thank you.

  Regards

  Tim

Thanks Steadman. What inks do you use with Torchon and with what
printer? I like printing my b/w as duotones similar to a selenium-
toned b/w. Right now I'm using a 1280 and can't buy a 2nd printer
right away. I just bot a complete new computer with 19" monitor a
Canon 4000dpi scanner and the 1280. If I tell the wife I'm going to
buy a 2nd printer I may be bunking over at a friends place. Haha.
I have a Wacom tablet and Painter software to buy yet. So maybe in a
couple of months but for now I plan to continue using duotones from
color inks. You have helped me make up my mind on the paper so it
just leaves the inks to decide about. Thank you for your help.

Duotone Workflows was Re: Tim York: re:papers

2001-08-01 by mwesley250@earthlink.net

Tim,

I gather you are doing duotones with the native Epson ink set and
driver? Would you be willing to post your workflow and duotone curves?

I would also recommend that you search out John Paul
Caponigro's article in either View Camera and Camera Arts (sister
magazines) for his detailed duotone procedure.

http://www.cameraarts.com/
http://www.viewcamera.com/

If you call they might be able to come up with a back issue. I
believe it was last fall. If not let me know and I will seriously dig
through my back issues.

You might also take a look at Michael H. Reichmann's Luminous
Landscape site and his post on duotones:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/duotone.htm

Tim,
I use PiezoBW inks in an 1160 with CIS. I have a 1200 with ColorPiezo and CIS but I am waiting for new profiles for the new yellow.

In your situation, you may want to "save money in the long run" by buying a CIS for about $120 and a set of ColorPiezo pigment inks for another $120 (for 6 4 ounce bottles). That is the best deal on color pigment inks I know of and it comes with free profiles to use with the Epson driver. Outstanding deal I think. Much better/cheaper in the long run than Epson carts. And pigmented inks should last much longer etc...etc...

If you want more info on the inks, just go to Inkjetmall.com where there is a complete comparison to other inks.

Good Luck,
Steadman

Duotone with Piezo Color? was Tim York: re:papers

Steadman,

Have you tried a duotone with the Piezo color inks? If you did, what
did you think of the results?

2001-08-01 by tyork@accesscable.net

Hi Martin,

Yes, I am using the Epson inks for now until I decide which way to go
re: inks. I am using a modified Michael Reichman formula that he has
on his site. As you know the 1280 prints blue, so with this duotone
recipe it was too blue to my liking, although, both my wife and
daughter liked it better then the more neutral one I use. All I did
was back off a little on the cyan ( I think )in the printer drivers
like a -5. You guys are much more knowledgeable then I am about
printing. I am just getting started. I couldn't do much printing
because I didn't have a good scanner. That has been resolved with my
Canon 4000dpi film scanner. Initially my paper choice had been made,
EAM, until the green issue raised it's head. Martin this is a great
list, you and Antonis are to be congratulated.

Tim

Martin,

I forgot to mention If you could find that article on duotones I
would really appreciate it. Perhaps put it on the list, as i"m sure a
lot of other folks would be interested as well. Thanks again.

Thanks Steadman, Piezocolor along with the new MIS inks and
Generations are the 3 I'm most interested in. I would be very
interested in how you made out with duotoned selenium piezo color
prints ( what a mouth full ). Thanks again for all your help and
those kind words about my images and site.

Duotone Workflows was Re: Tim York: re:papers

2001-08-01 by mwesley250@earthlink.net

Tim,

I will start digging through the stacks. I like to save all my photo
magazines for times like this but have no good filing system. I have
promised Steadman also so I guess I better get to it.

If anyone out there remembers the article, date, etc. please let me
know.

We would need to get the publisher's permission to post it, which I
can ask for. However, getting a copy would be the best as it has many
images in color showing the different tones he achieved.

I think that this is a technique that is over looked. It also has
great importance for new photographers who want to explore B&W but
may not have the resources to add extra printers/inks to their
equipment list or send their work out for Lightjet output. It should
also be printer independent. Epson has dominated the art print area
with good reason but the duotone method should be usable with all
brands.

Tim, Steadman,

I found the John Paul Caponigro article entitled: Black and White in
Color" in the March/April issue of View Camera. If you call 800-894-
8439 you can order a back issue.

He discusses most of the options for digital B&W output and then
discusses in general the use of Levels on an adjustment layer to
create a neutral or toned B&W print using any color ink set. NO
specific formulas or workflows, just general prodedural concepts with
about 10 color illustrations and example prints.

He has a great website at http://www.johnpaulcaponigro.com/

I will be interested to hear of your results in this direction.

Martin

Martin,

As I mentioned I e-mailed View Camera but they didn't know anything
about the article. I'm not sure where to go now. I read Allen's
comment to you but don't have the book. Oh well, C'est la vie.

Tim,

Try calling 800-894-8439. You are supposed to be able to order back
issues from them that way. Let me know if that works.
