The best way for me to gather info will be for interested folks to message me off-list with "Print Exchange" in the subject - may as well try to automate the registration. Thanks, Shaun Granleese

Shaun, count me in, will print with MIS Full Spectrum either through the Piezo Driver or with a customized Woolf Workflow. Just finished print # 31. I printed with MIS Full Spectrum on Epson 1160 using the Epson driver. I made 11 prints on Photo Rag 10 prints on W. Turner 10 prints on German Etching. So if anybody has a favorite, drop me an (off)line, and I will put his name on the paper. Hope that doesn´t drive Shaun nuts. Will use the back of EAM for comments and print two smaller versions (half letter) of the image on the coated side for comparison - using the Piezodriver plus MIS FS inks and the Piezodriver plus Cone inks. My 31 prints will be complete this evening. Only 11 more to go. Hmm, maybe I should reprint 3 on each of 10 different papers....or maybe one on each of 31 different papers.....? On second thought, nah not gonna happen. -Mike

Bernd, Wow! That sounds really great. Thanks for providing the opportunity for so many to see the side-by-side comparison of Piezo, MIS FS w/Piezo driver and MIS FS w/Epson driver! Bernd - are you saying that you're going to produce a print (on one of the three papers you mentioned) AND a comparison dual-print on the EAM for EACH participant? I must have misunderstood you.... Shaun

Shaun, The prints went out this morning to your home. I included a FedEx box with label from Canada for return shipping. You should have them Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for coordinating everything. Mike

Shaun, Bernd, I believe Bernd intended to print the comparisons as smaller images on the information sheet using EAM. Yes/no? This would keep two sheet standard and keep you both from additional work. Martin --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y..., "Shaun Granleese" <shaun@s...> wrote:

Subject: [Digital BW] Print Exchange 4 Shaun .....(Shaun, I really don´t want to interrupt your "workflow" packing the packages, but we all are sooo curious and impatient, please give us a little insight into the state of affairs. Bernd)...... Apologies but I've been doing so much reading up on all manner of digital printing issues (I've just returned a 2000P, and now have no printer) my head is spinning trying to decide which printers to buy and what to put in them and print on (without metamerism/fading). With this in mind could you prompt me a little into what state of affairs you refer to? Many Thx Shaun [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

The mafia weren't interested so I set up a table at a flea market... Here's all the news that's fit to print regarding the ongoing exchange: - Wow! Nice work all. - Bernd's incredible comparison of Cone vs. MIS FS inks via the PiezoBW driver is eye-opening and has changed my purchase plans. - We have 27 out of 32 packages in my hands (the 32nd is the set I made). - Everyone still to come in is in transit or has alerted me to the schedule (a few days at most). - We had one graceful exit and one participant who didn't respond to ANY of my messages, my irritation has changed to concern to be honest. - Both of these exits have been replaced with ultra-keen last minute participants, I thought it preferable to wait a few days and fill the roster than to ship everyone back a couple of their own prints. In fact, both of the replacements will likely have their prints in before the last couple of "stragglers" ;-) - I hope to begin shipping back in a week to 10 days. I will repost when I finish the collation. - Did I mention that I'm floored by everyones work? Shaun Granleese --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y..., " Ruhrfoto/Bernd L."

Shaun, I'm itching to know... hows the print exchange deliveries going? I can't wait to see how bad my printing really is! Or perhaps I'll be delitefully surprised that I'm on target. Any news? Dave Tevis

Hey Dave - I'm still waiting on 2 packages..... contain your groans, I am in contact with the senders. I have erred on the side of flexibility timewise - I've recruited replacements for all the dropouts and given extra time to some other participants - I'm assuming obviously that most of you would prefer to wait a couple of extra weeks and get none of your own prints back. Of course this is easy for me to say since I've been enjoying and examining everyones work for a month. By the way, the prize for first package to arrive goes to Jerry Olson. Dave, your work holds up admirably 'against' everyone elses - it's mine I'm worried about :-) I hope to collate this weekend even if all the prints are not in - then I'll add the last prints to come in and ship. Just received my Print Exchange package and I am very impressed and pleased. First thanks and three cheers to Shaun for making it all happen! Hip! Hip! Hurrah! Also special thanks to Bernd Langmack who sent three versions of his image MIS FS with the Epson driver, MIS FS with the Piezo driver and Piezo ink with the Piezo driver. Carolyn Frayn who sent four prints showing what can be done with the Epson 2000P and Epson color pigment inks. Paul Roark who sent three prints showing different tones achievable with the MIS VM ink set. Jeremy Cox who sent two prints showing the range of Lysonic E inks using a custom profile on Arches Hot Press paper and with a different profile on Epson Photo Quality Paper. Aside from the wonderful and varied pieces of art in this portfolio, this represents a remarkable set of first class example of what can be obtained with a wide variety of tools and materials. I count at least 6 different ink sets, 14 different papers and multiple combinations of drivers, printers and workflows. The collection is a testament to the current state of B&W print production using inkjet printers. While there are differences between the processes they are much less than what I imagined and all of them are fully viable as expressive, artistic mediums. Thanks to all who shared their vision. No kidding, Martin. Speaking of tools, can you recommend an eraser that could remove signatures from print surfaces? I'm gonna take all 31 of these and stick them on ebay and try to recoup some of the money I've blown in search of the ultimate ink and paper! Not to single anyone out, but I was pretty taken by Paul Roark's print of that tree stump. Shocking amount of detail, and no sign of any dots. PLUS, it was made on a lowly 3000! Good job... I was also taken by the amount of time that people took writing and preparing the descriptions on the backs of the prints. Some of these were almost as impressive as the fronts. If you don't remember, I was the geek that wanted to "standardize" the forms, so that everyone's was the same. Tucker, get a clue. This whole thing reminds of the spirit of "Shots" magazine; that little newsprint photography magazine that's made up of various photographers from around the country. The whole package just glows with the spirit of the great adventure of photography; it's slapped me out of my cynicism a bit today, (but I'm sure I'll gain it back). I look forward to tonight, when I can sit down with them all, have a nice glass of Single Barrel Jack Daniels, and have one of those rare moments of being reminded what photography is all about. Thanks, everyone who contributed. -Mark Tucker

What a pleasant surprise, 31 lovely print arrived at my office just about 10am. I put my "Do NOt Disturb" button on my phone, closed my door and proceeded to review the 31 images. The next two hours were spend enjoying the prints. Obviously there is a large diversity in photographic experience, but all of the images have a sense of place, expression and inner spirit. Thanks to all, I an honored to be part of this exchange. Regards and thanks to all, Mike Michael J. Kravit, AIA Architect/Photographer

Mine just arrived today as well! I'm like a kid in a candy store. This is a very special group of talented photographers that I'm proud to be associated with. What a treat to have... IN HAND... 31 awsome prints to study for technique and admire for beauty. Shaun, my compliments on your efforts and time. Thank you. Photographers of the group, my compliments on your quality, sharing, and talent. Thank you. Now... off to admire some great images! (and to be humbled) Dave Tevis

Well, I too missed out on the print exchange. I had assumed that it was for Piezo BW only. I asked Shaun if I could help with this one but he obviously did not need any... ;-) Carolyn

Hi group. Just got the 31 print package. Boy there are some terrific images in there. Many different kinds of paper too, that I had not seen before. All of the Hahnem\ufffdhle papers represented had beautiful blacks. This time, unlike the first set, I didn't see any flaking at all. Are you guys spraying your prints with something or do you think the papers are improving in this respect? > No kidding, Martin. Speaking of tools, can you recommend an > eraser that could remove signatures from print surfaces? Shirley, you jest! > I noticed a lot of prints were made with Paul's curves. Great Job Paul. I only use the MIS variable inks and Paul's curves now, in both the 1160 and 1280. Results are nearly identical, for all practical purposes. If there is another group, I'm going to submit a Digital D-30 Print. Ever since I got this camera, photography has become fun again. Love this camera! Jerry

I'm fairly new to this list, having been lurking for maybe a week or two. I seem to have joined a little too late and missed out on the print exchange. So, count me in on the next one.(but judging from all the "me too's", this could get unwieldy) I'm somewhat new to digital B/W and feel like I've got a lot to learn. Disscusing visual images is fun and useful but can only go so far. There's nothing like seeing original work(digital or silver). Anyway, I think I'm brave enough to be willing to share my fledgling attemps in exchange for seeing some "real" work. Thoughts on Shots magazine: I too hadn't read it in a little while and recently picked up the current issue. I was mildly disappointed. The imagery is still good and "on the edge", but it seems to have lost a little of that homemade feel of the early days. It just seems a little slicker and I miss things like the contributors comments. It was always very unpretentious. Oh well. Alan __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sounds good Scott. If you don't mind two suggestions... Change the subject line like Heath did to which I responded earlier with a list of names (maybe the Second DBaWtP Exchange)... take that list I compiled and add: Mark Tucker Ken Durling That list was pretty much in order of the people who signed up already. That was how Shaun started the first DBaWtP print exchange. Would not want anyone to miss your web link later on. Thanks, Carolyn

All, I have a final list of people for the print exchange. It was put together in combinatoin of those who signed up online and those who got their request in by email first. There are 31 individuals signed up currently. As far as I can tell this is about the max for an exchange. I will leave that up to the participants. If you don't mind making more than 31 prints let me know. If everyone is willing to do more I will add more people to the list. To see the list go to: www.praxis-systems.com/inkjetexchange/printexchange.asp I would appreciate it if the following individuals would contact me off list. I need to get email addresses and mailing information. (scott@...-systems.com) Andy Darlow Brian Mikiten Alan Sanders-Herring Cleavis ? Daren Maranya Howard Slavitt Ken Durling Mark Tucker Schilesh Jani James Lerager Trish Ternahan I would like to add thumbnails of the submitted prints to the list. When you have decided what you will be submitting could you please send me a jpeg, png or gif image of appx 150 x 200 pixels to use on the list. Thanks Scott p.s. Even if you are not participating you can go to www.praxis-systems.com/inkjetexchange to look at information on your favorite papers and inksets. I would appreciate it very much if people would visit the site and add comments about your experiences with different papers and inksets. This is an online database and the more user comments that are added the more valuable it will be. I am adding to the database and working on the site in general to improve it's usefulness. Some pages and features do not yet work 100%.

Seth, I was only trying to offer you a more innocent view of what you perceived as some sort of affront. As a twenty five professional photographer I would never condone or support anyone illegally reproducing or distributing intellectual property of any kind. I also won't reproduce copyrighted photos or go into the "gray" area of copyright at all. Sometimes things are more innocent than they appear. Blessings and many photo sales to you this holiday season. I suspect a large part of the bitching here is ego. Someone got a buck for a print whilst the author couldn't. No wrong has been done. There is no contractual obligation in the print exchange, no restricting obligations. Seth gave someone a pair of pink socks, they didn't like them enough to keep them, gave them to someone else, and now they are for sale at a garage-sale . . . period. While I don't think the manner in which it was handled was the most "elegant", no law has been broken, no affront made, except for someone's ego . . . so what. The lesson is simple, especially for someone who has a "law degree" . . . next time put up restrictions in print, get the recipient to sign aforesaid contract, then submit your work. Otherwise, don't participate. Paul Aparycki Seth, I was only trying to offer you a more innocent view of what you perceived as some sort of affront. I'd like to explore the possibility of a print exchange. What better way to gain insight into different printing techniques, then to actually see each others prints with a brief description of your workflow. I would be willing to organize it. I'm not talking about sending museum size prints. Anything easy to mail, starting at postcard size would be fine. If you are interested, send me your mailing address along with your e-mail address. After a couple of weeks I will e-mail the list directly to you. I just participated in a print exchange (on an infrared list) where the number of people exchanging prints was limited to 15, to make it workable.
