I am using the MIS VM inks and was thinking of switching to the FS
using a CIS System. My question is how difficult is it to purge the
old VM ink out?

Re: [Digital BW] Re: MIS inks with Piezo driver?

2002-07-09 by Bernhard.Schuerlein@t-online.de

Iam on a CIS. I went from the FS to the VM and now back to the FS. IF you purge the carts and tubes by printing it takes quite a long time, about 20 A3 pages fully covered by a purge pattern. Its faster to build in a new CIS. The bad thing is that of course this is more expensive.

Btw, having stepped back I find the FS way too warm. I have now ordered the FS "neutral" ink. I found teh VM too dificult in terms of getting a regular tone. I happened to get colour casts that were difficult to control exactly.

Has someone on the list experience with the "FS neutral" ink?

The MIS system has sponges inside the cart. adapters. FWIW, I asked Bob Z.
about the switch over and he said the best thing to do was to buy a new set
of cart. adapters for about $35 because you are going to have a difficult to
impossible time flushing all of the ink out of the sponges.

Don't waste your time or your inks in trying to purge the inks out of the carts -
it's impossible. Buy a new set of carts for around $35.00

Yeah thats it - 20 DIN A3 prints is more or less exactly the same number I
have experienced. As one can use cheapest paper this should be much less
expensive than a new set of carts, specially because the ink you\ufffdre
"wasting" is the one you don\ufffdt want anymore anyway.

I've changed inks many times in a CIS. Just print about 20 13x19 inch
photos or better yet, giant stepwedges until you see the color change.
It's the cheapest, easiest way to go. After about 20 prints, the colors
will be of the new inks, and there really is no problem.

Jerry (or any others),

I recently bought an 1160 with a Niagara CIS that had used color dye
inks. I want to change it to use MIS FS inks. I understand that I will
need to order new carts and wash out the tube lines. But I also heard
I will need to buy some kind of vacuum kit to prime the lines and
carts. Anyone know where I can get info on what exactly I need to
order, where and how to do this kind of thing?

Thanks.

Best regards,
 Richard

Bernhard,

The MIS-FSN is a cool neutral. Rather too cool for my taste. If you look in
the Files section of the group homepage in the folder:

Files > Ink Sets > MIS > MIS FS

you will find scans of wedges printed with both FS ink sets and information
on the trials I did blending FSN and FS-Standard at 90/20 and 50/50.

The 50/50 is close to the Warm Neutral PiezoTone, although I prefer the
PiezoTone.

So if you get the FSN hang onto the FS inks you have as you may want to try
blending them yourself.

Thanks, that was a helpful advice. I will first try out the neutral one and
if it looks too cool for me I have enough standard FS ink to blend it....

I was amazed how much my perception had changed after going back to FS (from
VM). When I first started FS (my first ink) I loved tzhe arm tone, now I
hardly can look at it :-)
However I like real sepia toning, but FS is neither neutral nor sepia...

Greetings Bernhard

Bernhard,

Have you considered the Sepia-VM that goes from neutral to full sepia tone?
You will find some examples of Paul Roark's images in the Files MIS-VM
folder as well.

The vacuum device comes with the Niagara CIS kit.

Jerry

If you are changing from color to black quad inks, you probably will have to
get new cartridges.

Thanks for the reply Jerry. I should have been more clear. I bought
the whole thing used and the CIS did not come with the vacuum device.
