Epson 2200

I just read Michael Reichman review on the Epson 2200 for BW printing
(http://www.luminous-landscape.com/) . Interesting. Any experiences from the
people in this group? Any signs of a CFS and Bulks inks coming?

I went to an Apple imaging seminar this week and saw a 2200, and 2200 output
for the first time. The color output on matte papers was nice...but I don't
imagine any better than one could get with a 3rd party color ink set that
was profiled with a RIP. The black and white output was much better than
what I was able to get with 6 color printers in the past...but I would take
my quad prints any day...but its difficult to say for sure because I was
just looking at some else's prints. The biggest problem at this point is
that the 2200 inks are the price of gold and that the paper settings may or
may not work with a diversity of different non-epson papers.

As far as 3rd party solutions go...it looks like a CIS would be possible if
someone cracks the chip and writes a driver for the thing...but I'm guessing
that is at least a year away.

Epson 2200

2002-09-13 by George DeWolfe

Margaret

We used the 2200 in a Digital Fine Print workshop 2 weeks ago and found
that, compared to the 1280 color gamut, it was very close but still a little shy
in the red, and of course, it was faster and more vivid than the 2000P.

Our experience with grayscale was that it printed near neutral with the
Photo Ink set, but we didn't have a Matte Set to test. The Photo Inks did
best on the Premium Semigloss, and the neutral had a very, very, very
slight green tinge in daylight, but seemed to be neutral under tungsten.
With Archival (sic) Matte, the Photo Inks dumped the shadows.

We also ran a comparison with the same images on the Piezography 3000
Selenium Tone Inks and found the black to be much richer and more
3-Dimensional with the Piezography.

So far I am impressed with Epson's attempt to produce a good black, but
am especially excited with the strides they have made with the 2200's color
abilities.

First off, I am a newby to this site. Secondly,it's easy to see most
members questions and answers are way over my head.I would like to
ask a question or two. I am considering the purchase of an Epson
2200. My question(s)are; Can I expect this printer to deliver
quality and sellable prints in both color and B&W? If so,is Epson
ink and paper a good choice? I do most of my work in B&W, but I need
the option of color also. Many thanks for any advice. Michael

Yes, up to 12x18 inches.

Yes, but you can save some money without any quality loss by using MIS
UC equivalent inks and refilling yourself with their new easy refill
clear carts.

You will need to use a RIP (QTR or IJC/OPM) for toned B&W with either
the Epson or MIS UC color inks or use a B&W inkset like MIS UT7 and
switch cartridges when printing B&W or simply print with only the black
ink.

Re: Epson 2200

Michael,

The 2200 is a great printer, and yes, you can get great color and B&W
from it. For color work, the Epson standard ultrachrome inks work
very well for color, but you will probably want custom printer
profiles for accuracy.

You can use the same UC inks for B&W and get great results, but not
with the Epson driver, unless you choose "black only" printing. Some
people like BO printing and others don't. You will probably want to
use a program like IJC/OPM or QTR for your B&W work, especially if
you do a lot of it. The Epson driver is designed for color printing,
and if you use all the colored inks with it, you will get lousy
results.

You can also use third party quad tone or ultratone inks in a 2200.
These inks have very limited gamut and are designed specifically for
B&W printing, but this means you have to swap back and forth for
color and B&W. They will deliver superior results for B&W, however.
Having said that, I am getting excellent results using the standard
UC inks in my 2200 with IJC/OPM.

The 2200 is a wonderful printer for up to 13X19 inch prints. The UC
inks are pigment based and have excellent archival quality. My
prints using UC inks are definitely saleable.

Lou

research bought the 2200 Epson. In short it is a great
machine for b&w and color on the velvet art paper and
canvas and matte but on all the other ( luster, glossy
ect: ) under direct light or at certain angles you get
flat shinny areas and glowing highlights. I returned
it and got the Cannon 9900 large format. Great prints!
