[Digital BW] question re roark curves

2001-08-29 by Paul Roark

John,

You asked:

>for an image destined to be output via the epson driver and Roark curves,
>what grayscale profile should I use? a custom dot gain curve like I would
>with piezo?

My PC Color Settings (Edit, Color Settings) are at "Photoshop 5 Default
Spaces." This top line setting includes Gray Gamma 2.2.

>also, in the epson print dialog what settings should I enter for source
>space etc (I have PCM turned off)?

In the first printer dialogue box I have the "Print Space" "Profile" set at
"Same as Source."

Jerry Olson, who uses a Mac, has a spot for a media setting in the dialogue
boxes of his 1280, as I understand it, and has it set to gamma 1.8. The
1280 curves have been written based on Jerry's settings. I don't know if we
have a PC v. Mac difference here.

You don't use an actual Profile, Johnny.

You convert the file to RGB, apply the curve in a photoshop adjustment (just load it there), and when you print, select Photo Quality Inkjet
setting, and in the Print Dialogue box, select "same as source" That's about it.

Curves work for 1440 OR 720 DPI. Error diffusion on, high speed off, of course. I'm on a Mac, so I use 1.8 gamma, on a P.C., I guess it's
2.2. Paul will know this one.

Mr. Jerry Olsen --

In your message below, are you implying that when using MIS VT inks and Paul
Roark's adjustment curves, one is to select Photo Quality Inkjet Paper as
the Epson driver media setting irrespective of the paper actually being
used?

Thank you.

Howard

Yes. Since these media settings lay down ink from the most to the least in the order they appear, you might try each one to see which you
like best. There isn't much difference between a lot of them, visually, anyhoo.
