Scanning HiBit

Scanning HiBit

2001-08-31 by Dave Tevis

This might be a tad of topic but someone here may have the
answer. I am scanning 2 1/4 with my epson 1600 using
Silverfast Scan software. Silverfast gives great control over
scanning chromes, and b/w, as long as I don't scan HiBit. But I'll
be darned if I can get a good scan in HiBit from Silverfast. The
scans are dark and difficult to adjust in PS. Yet scans from the
Epson driver in HiBit (even with the crude controls) turn out much
better. So much better that I must be doing something wrong but
can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Dave,

Hibit mode in the Silverfast software is actually a RAW file format. As such
you need to check box in the options that says something like "HDR OUTPUT".
This allows Silverfast to lighten up the image so that it is workable in
Photoshop or better yet Silverfast HDR.

the hi bit output from Silverfast is not gamma corrected. All the
information is there but to correct it in photoshop you need to do a levels
command to set b/w points (use auto with 0% clipping) and then change the
gamma either using the centre slider in levels or by applying levels and
going into curves and fiddling with the midtones.

As someone else said it is possible to output gamma corrected 16-bit files
from Silverfast. You set this in options somewhere... with a check
box...would look it up for you but disk crash has taken out all my apps this
week.

It sounds like your Silverfast HiBit scans do not have gamma
correction (easy to do) whereas your Epson HiBit scans do. You
should definitely check out Ian Lyons website and his Silverfast
tutorials. They're excellent and should answer you question.

Mike,

I figured it was something like that, but still can't find anything
similar in the options. Where should I be looking? I am using SF
5.1 on a mac.

Re: Scanning HiBit

FYI... I was using Silverfast 5.1xx something and I downloaded
an upgrade to version 5.2. Big difference! 5.1 did not control
gamma on HiBit scans like the Epson software did. Version 5.2
does. Thanks for all the help.
