PiezoTones: Are they ready for prime time ?

PiezoTones: Are they ready for prime time ?

2002-08-07 by lawrencetrek

Microbanding, clogging, and now clipping ...

As I debate making an investment into a new 1280 printer for PiezoTones
carts, some of you guys are continuing to scare me off. How, prevalent are
these problems ? Are any of you having trouble free printing with the new
inks (with the 1280 carts rather than CIS) and producing excellent prints ? If
so, why are others posting such problems.

Now, I am starting to consider the prospect of buying the Epson 2200 and
buying custom printer profiles to try to produce my B/W digital prints. Could
be less stressful until more of the kinks are removed from piezography. Help
and guidance would be appreciated.

Lawrence,

You know there is one option that does not get discussed much. This
the FS-E inks from MIS. These inks can be used with the Epson driver,
which will give you deeper blacks than Pizeography right off the bat.
A very simple curve in grayscale is used to linearize the image, and
viola!

I have been using a similar approach using FS inks, by switching ink
positions. It is outlined in the FS pages of inkjetgoodies.com (I
have no ties of any sort). But, I am sure the FS-E inks are equally
capable.

Good luck.

Shilesh

Lawrence-

I haven't wanted to jump in with a Piezo bashing thread, but I can
give you my experience with the piezotones.

I got really fantastic looking prints on my 1160 with the neutral-
warm carts...really great...for 2 sets of carts, then the banding
started. Sound familiar? I began spending more time cleaning the
printer than using it for printing.

I give up. I just don't want to go through the whole issue of "what's
wrong or not with the inks" again. So I went back to MIS FS and
installed a CIS so I wouldn't have a choice in the matter for at
least a few months <g> (I have pint bottles).

Was it the ink? Who knows. I'm getting a little banding with the FS
ink now (I didn't before I loaded the piezotone) (this also happened
when I switched back from the PiezoBW inks for a while). We'll see if
the banding clears over time...if it does, I'll stay away from the
piezsotones until there is a revision and then try them again because
I really respect Jon Cone and love his software (logic would dictate
that his inks should work best with his software), but the clog and
band issue just takes the fun out of digital printing, so I'm
stepping back from the experiment for now.

BTW, I'd been using FSN ink and forgot just how great the FS is (I'm
mostly using the piezo driver).

Just my two cents...

Perhaps, for those of us new to this group and this technology, someone
could take the time to make up a glossary of common terms and
(especially) acronyms and post it to the "files" section? I, for one,
would much appreciate it.

Thank you,

Being a semi-beginner myself in this I know what you are talking about.
However time well spent would be checking out the Files, Bookmarks and
Database links at this list's home site:

I also "defined" a few terms for you below:

Great list of products Richard. FYI: You can also find out about all
of these solutions in one place - www.inkjetgoodies.com We carry all
of the mentioned products, and can answer any questions about them.

Also, the PiezoBW software coupon that we offered to this group is
still valid should any one need it (digitalbw).

Thanks.

Yes! I should have mentioned Greg's site. After all that is where I
got my MIS FS inks!

My 2c:

I've been using the MIS VM inks in a 1280 with NMC CIS for 9-10 months. That
time frame includes both dry winter weather as well air-conditioned summer
humidity in Indiana.

The printer sits idle for days at a time. I just started on my second bottle
of inks and new carts/tubing a few weeks ago. I simply don't have problems
with clogs. Period. It's been (knock on wood!) an extraordinarily
trouble-free combination for me. I love it!

I am in the same situation that you are (were) in. I bought a 1280
and was about to invest in Piezography until I started hearing about
both how well the 2200 B&W prints are along with the clogging
problems with Piezography ink. What did you conclude?

I do not print very frequently (anywhere from 1-4 weeks between print
jobs)...I didn't have a chance to scan all the messages, but is
anyone saying that CIS systems are not appropriate for users like me
since the setup stays idle? Or is clogging something that we will
experience independent of whether it is CIS or cartridge?

thanks in advance
