Hi Andy,

I use it and find it to be just a HAIR sharper than Genuine Fractals.
Barely noticeable. I was amazed at how good it is, and wished I had
tried it before I bought the GF program. Use it before you do any sharpening.

Hi Andy,

I agree with Jerry. I've run numerous comparisons on various images pitting GF against Fred Miranda's SI PhotoShop action and, each time,
have found SI just a tad sharper. Probably not enough the you would notice it at print size, but, hey, I figure sharper can't hurt! If you are using
SI against, say, D30 image files you owe it to yourself to try Fred's camera-specific SI Pro actions. They produce even better results than the
original SI.

As Jerry said, I too wish I had found Fred's website before investing in GF.

Best regards,
Alan

Does anyone have experience with Stair Interpolation, an alternative
to Genuine Fractals? I'd appreciate any pointers especially where
in the workflow you would apply the Action. I suppose that it would
be just before the print routine. I use MIS VM and an 1160.

I just bought his D60 sharpener. It is better than any other sharpener
I've ever used. It automatically gives you the sharpest image possible
without any artifacts.

Jerry,

I believe the sharpest image you can possibly get would be if the image was
a line art image ;-) I am curious, does the D-60 have a linear mode? I
guess you could always do that in PS if you wanted...

Mark,

I have several of Fred's actions: LPBatch, CSPro, SIPro, DigitalVelvia, to name a few. All work as advertised. And, you can't beat 'em for the price! I have directly compared SIPro (stair interpolation) to GF, and CSPro (sharpening) to nik Sharpner Pro, and Fred's actions consistently perform as well as or better than software products costing hundreds of $$. Highly recommended! Fred's gallery pages are a feast for the eyes, too. Surf on over.......

Have no idea Austin, I just compared it to all my other sharpeners, and
it wins. (there is over 40 different steps in the action!)

Stair Interpolation is not a digital camera specific action. It is
designed to enlarge a file without degrading the image quality. It
has the same goal as Genuine Fractals. It is not a sharpener.

Would some of the other people who have used SI have suggestions
about dealing with huge size files that result from SI? Lets say I
scan a 35mm neg or transparency at 2400 on my Epson 2450 with a
resulting 50meg or so file. (With 120 film the issue isn't as
extreme.) I then use SI to enlarge to 10x15. Now I have a huge
file. My instinct is to reduce the resolution prior to printing to
480pi, save then sharpen and then work up the pre-print routine. Is
this the right workflow.

a HAIR better than Genuine Fractals. Very small, but noticeable in side

RE: [Digital BW] Stair Interpolation

2002-08-12 by A. Huntley

Alan,

I think a little confusion may have set in here. SI (Stair Interpolation), like GF, is for "rezzing up" image files. SI does not sharpen, nor does GF. However, I noticed that Fred's new PRO versions of SI do have an unsharp mask step built in. It must be a mild application of unsharp mask because subsequent sharpening of the image does not cause any problems.

I use Fred's actions mainly on image files from digital cameras. My large format B&W work does not require any interpolation to obtain the prints sizes I normally output.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Alan
