USB cable length

USB cable length

2002-08-14 by MARK MAIO

I am setting up my Epson 1280 and for reasons too long to go into, it
has to be about 15 feet from my Mac G3. My Epson instructions caution
against having a USB cable longer than 6 1/2 feet, as it might cause
printing problems. Any thoughts or experience with this?

Thank you,

Mark Maio

According to usb.org:

"Q2: How long of a cable can I use to connect my device?
A2: In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between
full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low
speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches)."

Ake

Excellent reference...thanks. Also good to note...as I had said...that hubs
buy you more mileage just like SCSI...within reason.

mark,

following is a quote from the www.cablesnmor.com website (they have tons of
odd cables and connectors that do stuff you've probably never considered).
sounds like the exact thing you need (U$21)... note the fact that they say
you can string 5 together for a combined length of 80 feet!

hope this helps,

garth

The USB standard limits the length of a usb cable to 5 meters (about 16.5
ft.).
* This active extension allows you to extend your webcam, printer, etc.
beyond that limit.
* The length of this high quality cable is 16' (4.8m)
* You can combine up to 5 of these cables for a maxium distance of 80
feet.
* Made with gold connectors and flexible cable.
* Foil and braid shielding is used to reduce EMI/RFI interference.
* Low capacitance cable to reduce transmission problems.
* Plug & play - no drivers required.
*    USB 1.1 compliant.
*    PC/MAC compatible.
*    Manufactured by GoldX

FWIW, I have 2 15 footers linked together going from a MAC cube to an
hub (ac powered) and then to an HP 970 and it works fine.

USB cable length

2002-08-16 by MARK MAIO

Thanks you to all of those members who responded to my inquiry regarding
the USB cable length of 20' to my printer. I decided to buy a 10' cable
and a 10' extension and they work fine.
