Jerry, sorry to disagree, but I have Fractals Print Pro and i think
that it beats all the Stair Interepolation actions that I have
tried. I have closely looked at the results from all and Fractals is
not only sharper but offers better contrast as well,
The only problem being is the price.

Just my 2p's worth.

I just have the free one, (about a year or so old) but it beats genuine
fractals by a hair. Just barely noticeable, but you can see it.

I will probably get the D60 one soon for my new camera.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm not sure I have the
Print Pro version, but I paid about $150 for it. And Fred's stairstep is
noticeably sharper. I don't mean a lot sharper, its just barely
noticeable.

Jerry

P.S. It's also MUCH faster.

Jerry,
there is another option which is Qimage Pro, the print function
allows one to set just about any print size. I have it, but I don't
use it all that much, I instead tend to use PS. however in the past
I have made some great large prints using it. The software author,
Mike Chaney claims it's the best interpolation out there!
I have actually two copies of fractals, due to a erroneous internet
purchase, if anyone wants the new unregistared version they can
email me.

Barry, Is this shareware, or a software package? I don't make prints
any bigger than 13x19, so I don't think I'd need anything better than
Fred's stairstep action.

RE: [Digital BW] Stair Interpolation - Which Version to Buy?

2002-08-15 by A. Huntley

Bob,

I read somewhere recently that Fred's camera specific SI Pro actions reportedly work on similar size image files, regardless of camera make. That is, the D30 Pro action should work on any 3 megapixel camera, the D60 on 6 megapixel, etc. This seems a little odd to me because the camera specific actions were, according to Fred, developed specifically for the full-size image dimensions of the selected camera. However, Fred's original SI action, which I used extensively before getting an SI Pro version, I believe has been upgraded to a Pro version itself. I can assure you that even the original SI was a hair sharper than Genuine Fractals "rezzing" to the same size. Therefore, I wouldn't hesitate buying the updated SI if one of the camera specific ones won't fit your requirements.

BTW, I've never known Fred to not answer his e-mail. Sometimes, though, it does take a couple of days to get a response. I'm sure he must be away, occasionally, in order to obtain those beautiful images he has of places like Yosemite! If you don't get a response in a few days, resend because maybe your message fell into the "black hole."

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Alan

Subject:	[Digital BW] Stair Interpolation - Which Version to Buy?

Hi All,

I'm really anxious to buy Fred Miranda's SI Pro PhotoShop Action. I
sent his customer support an email last Friday inquiring about which
one would be best given my camera, but they have not answered my
email yet.

I'm uncertain which version I should purchase since my Nikcon
CoolPix5000 is a 5 megapixel camera. Should I get the one for Canon
D60 (6 megapixel) or the Canon 1D (4 megapixel)? Or would the Nikon
D1x be best?

Can anyone give me some advice on which version would probably be
best for me to use?

Thanks!

Bob

RE: [Digital BW] Stair Interpolation - Which Version to Buy?

2002-08-15 by A. Huntley

Barry,

Just to add my 2 cents worth, too...

Please don't forget that increased contrast will make images appear sharper. I, too, have GF Print Pro and have compared it numerous times to the original free SI action and, more recently, my D30 SI Pro action. To my eye...and, of course, this is a very subjective area here...if you get the contrast between the two identical the SI version looks a little sharper. I ain't saying it's much, but I can see it on my monitor anyway.

One of the reasons I use Fred's actions is because other software I have, GF and nik Sharpener Pro, seem to "kick up" the contrast. As a matter of fact, I recently discovered that the Autoscan technique in nik Sharpener Pro actually generates a more contrasty image than simply applying the filter sans the Autoscan step. I happened to select the "wrong" thing one day, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the result! Fred's CS Pro, on the other hand, produces clean, sharp images without those artifacts we all fight avoid.

Besides, whether Fred's SI is a hair sharper than GF or the other way 'round. Who cares? Look at the price difference. I own several of Fred's actions and each performs very closely to or slightly better than software costing, sometimes, hundreds of $$. Fred's actions are a steal by comparison. I recommend buying 'em by the dozen.

Best regards,
Alan

Jerry, sorry to disagree, but I have Fractals Print Pro and i think
that it beats all the Stair Interepolation actions that I have
tried. I have closely looked at the results from all and Fractals is
not only sharper but offers better contrast as well,
The only problem being is the price.

Just my 2p's worth.

Re: [Digital BW] Stair Interpolation - Which Version to Buy?

2002-08-15 by flyfishingusa2002

Jerry,
Qimage pro has it's own yahoo forum, it seems very well respected.
It is a software package and is available as a trial download from
http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/demo.htm I use it when I want to
put multiple prints onto shared sheets of paper. For that it is very
good. It also excells in being able to convert Nef files to tiff or
whatever. I happen to have a Nikon D1 and I prefer to use Nikon
Capture 2 and then PhotoShop 7 for fine tuning. If I want to make a
large print i save my file in STN (GF format) and then open the
print in the size that I want. I find this workflow to be flexible.
I print B/W all sizes up to 16 x 20.
Also lets not forget the Poster option on epson 12xx series
printers. I have printed some great prints using this.
I too own several of Freds actions, But I still find the above
workflow better. For a start, once I have saved in STN format, it is
very quick to resize to a new size on opening the file. The qualitly
in the larger sizes is outstanding. I am sure that Fred's stair
interpolation is great, I just prefer the above.
regards

Barry

Thank you for all the responses on my question about which Stair
Interpolation software to buy. I'm going to go with Fred Miranda's. He's
emailed me this afternoon to advise me on the best version for use with my
Nikon CoolPix 5000 -- the D1xSI Pro.

Thanks again.

Bob
