Problem -- line of dots on prints

2002-08-17 by tzinzunzan2000

I'm printing with an 1160 using MIS' VM inkset. I've recently noticed
that my A3 prints have an evenly spaced (about one half inch between
them) series of very very small (almost not noticeable without a
loupe) dots running across the print. This series of dots continues
across to the end of the paper -- in other words, right across what
would otherwise be blank paper. Of course, I don't want this to be
happening. Anyone have a possible diagnosis and cure? It would be
muchy appreciated.

Are these ink dots or indentation dots? The latter can be avoided by
removing the "pizza cutter" wheels which the paper passes through as it
exits the printer.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, they're ink.

Re: [Digital BW] Problem -- line of dots on prints

Well... maybe it is indentations. I say this because, after looking
more closely, I noticed that the dots do not appear until after the
ink is being laid down on the print and then begin to disappear(two
or three into the margin) after inking stops. I don't understand,
however, why wheel indentations would be noticeably darker than the
area they are being pick up from. I'll have to do some experimenting
I guess to focus in on the source of the problem. Oh, is removing the
wheel difficult?

Chris,

Something else to try. You might have some ink saturated lint or other dirt
on the bottom of the head or print head carriage. You will need to release
the print head so that you can manually move it back and forth. I am not
sure how this is done on the 1160 but you should be able to do it by pushing
the proper buttons for moving the head to the cartridge changing position
and then unplugging the printer without turning it off.

Put some paper towel with Windex or IPA and water in the trough where the
head runs back and forth. Manually move the head across the paper towel to
wipe off any debris. You will probably have to change the paper towel a few
times. Thin sponge dishwashing cloth is better than paper towel if you can
find it. While the head is out of the way you may want to wipe off the
parking pad in case it has become over saturated with ink. Before you plug
the printer back in make sure the head is all the way back to its normal
start position, not the cartridge loading position.

Do nozzle checks and head alignment.

Thanks, Martin. That seems to have done the trick.

Re: Problem -- line of dots on prints

Well, I guess I spoke too soon. The dots are still there -- black,
evenly spaced, about 1/2 inch apart, very very small. I'm beginning
to suspect that it may be a software issue, but am not certain how
that could occur. At any rate, I'll try cleaning again and also
search the Yahoo epson printer list for clues. Thanks again.
