I've read some posts here regarding the R220 being used with UTR2 MIS
Inks'. I'd like to go this way for digital B&W printing but realized
that I can't find any R220 (neither new or used). Would the R265 or
the R360 do the same work? Otherwise which A4 printer should I
consider to buy? My budget is very limited so I can't consider buying
the R2400 or the new R3800.

Michele,

I got my R220 at Ritz Camera a little over a month ago. The R220s
aren't listed on their website but give your local store a call. My
store said if they didn't have one they could get one from another
store. The C88s are still available but they don't print BO very well
and work best with glossy papers. Good luck!

I've been using the R220 with the MIS UTR2 inkset for a few months. The
combo creates very nice prints. I recently set the R220 up for variable
tone BO printing by adding the UTR2 warm inks. For the money the R200
with the MIS inkset is unbeatable.

BTW - I found my R220 at a local camera shop for $60 (US). Right now
there are four or five available on ebay at good prices.

Eric (and anyone else),

How do you like the variable tone printing with the R220? I started
with the warm tone inkset and my R220 so I could try something
different from the neutral inkset that I used on the C86. I find the
warm tone inkset too warm for my tastes but not a big deal since I've
been printing BO for the most part. Now I have a couple of images that
have a lot of detail and the BO prints are too 'grainy'. I'm thinking
about buying the all the neutral inks but debating whether or not to
set up for variable tone printing. Any thoughts?

I find the neutral inks too cool and quite bluish on many papers. I
recommend having one dark and white light ink warm, the other light
and dark cool and yellow cool.

I have warm in magenta/light magenta, cool ink cyan/light cyan and
cool in yellow and find it neutral. I hope to create some ICC
profiles with the driver slider set to -20C +20M, etc for a
simplified variable tone inkset.

I find that just the driver sliders don't give me consistency with
the Roark ICC workflow.

I found the MIS-EZN inks ,even with the warm ink in the yellow
position, were a bit on the cool side with my C86 and EEM. That's why
I opted for the warm inkset with my R220-but its way too warm. Maybe
the neutral inks for the R220 and a 'warm' paper will give the look
I'm after.

Hi Michele;

The two newer printers you mention will most likely do an even better
job, when they are supported; Right now there are no re-fillable carts,
no chip re-setters, nothing at all to make them useable for 3rd party
inks and printing systems.

I just did a search on ebay, there are several new printers being
offered that look safe enough. The models that will work are: R200,
R220, R300, R320, and R340.

Best,

Steve Karafyllakis

Thnx Steve, that's the info I was looking for.

Hey Scott,

So far I like what the variable tone set up is giving me. For most of
my prints I leave the sliders at 0. This produces a warmer image that
the neutral inks alone, but not enough to call the image 'warm'. For
some images I like the neutral inks only.....for other images I like
more warm ink so I increase the ammount via the sliders. It all depends.
